What keeps users engaged with a platform over time?

I have been thinking about why some users stay active on a platform for a long time while others lose interest quite quickly. At first glance, many platforms seem similar in terms of games and features, but long-term engagement varies significantly. I would like to understand what factors contribute most to keeping users engaged. Is it regular updates, personal habits, social interaction, or the overall structure of the platform that matters most in the long run?

Re: What keeps users engaged with a platform over time?

I notice that my own engagement tends to drop when a platform starts to feel repetitive over time or when the available content begins to feel too similar without enough variation to keep things interesting. It also happens when it becomes harder to discover new features, games, or sections in a natural and intuitive way, because the lack of clear discovery paths makes the experience feel more limited and less engaging. Even if a platform has good core functionality, this kind of stagnation gradually reduces motivation to stay active, since users often rely on a sense of novelty and easy exploration to remain interested in the long run.
