Here's a YouTube clip of Fireball winning the 1958 NASCAR Northern 500: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkSZ_Oa2FBs. It's from a DVD that my father and I created. He shot 8mm footage of the races all those years ago, and I painstakingly created a realistic soundtrack in sync with the cars zooming by. To find out more, please visit www.speedvids.com. |

I grew up with Pam Roberts. My mother was very good friends with Doris Roberts. We lived around the corner from the Roberts family on jessamine blvd. I was saddened by the passing of Pam. My siblings and I did not know about Pams death untill about 6 months after. I have some really good stories about the Roberts family. I hope to hear from someone who knows us and the Roberts family. |

First truly intellectual nascar driver, only driver to win coveted ''hickock'' belt'' , could, and did win driving fords, chevys, pontiacs, buicks, olds, etc. And it has been said that as he raced you, he would sub-conscoiusly rate your driving ability. Fireballs driving, and smokey yunicks, or holman-moodys race cars were always at least up front, if the car [or engine], could stay together. When he was out of the race, as a child, I , just wanted to leave the track. When he died, I lost my only real nascar driver. [IF] there was a fuel cell in the passino-purple ford at charlotte, and he wore a fire suit, there is no doubt in my mind that richard petty probably wouldn't have as many wins, [ nothing against Richard Petty]. and, Fireball roberts would have been one of the first inductees in the ''hall of fame'', in charlotte. In july, 2010, I took my son to the Darlington, ''old joe wetherly'' museum, then on to charlotte to the hall. The hall of fame is great if you are only 25, or 30 years old. No one seems to remember the men who raced real stock cars, no power steering, no ''cool suit'', no fire suit, sometimes no lap belt, let alone a harness, hans device, a strap, or cable to hold your head straight in the turns, etc, etc, etc. These drivers were REAL MEN, and in my book, EVERY driver that drove and won races before 1969 should have been the first inductees. As I walked through the old Darlington Museum, it was a uphoric experience. there is REAL history there. In the new hall of fame, the only interesting, or even intreging thing was a mock-up of the new ford racing engine. [would have been nice to see the chevy, and even better the toyota racing engine]. I wonder when the last time toyota used pushrod- type engines in anything? Just an old mans point of view, I guess. |

Me and my dad has also been a big fan of racing either it be cars or motorcycles. We use to watch Kenny Roberts (the motorcycle champ.back in the days) do wheelies across the finish line. I always liked and wondered if I was ever related to Fireball or Kenny Roberts. Would love to do a family tree. I am 45 years old and me and my dad still watch the Daytona and Indy 500 together. |

I have a painting of the 1962 Daytona with Fireball Roberts leading the race> It was given to me by my grandfather who was a flagman for nascar in the good ole days. Supposedly this painting is an original, one of 2 with the other hanging in Daytona. Just looking to find out what the value of this painting is it has been in my family since it was painted. If you have any info or would like further info(i.e. photo of painting) please email me at teamroc@embarqmail.com. Take Care, Brent |
