Poon and Lump
Hope you all had good running yesterday!
The East wind and full moon has made our life difficult. But we have managed to have a race most nights, but no luck in the mornings.
Snow missed a tree Fri. and have not hunted her at night. We have treed every cat this week.
Our Buddy in Arkansas who has all of daddys dogs caught three and treed tree this week. He ran one 2 1/2 hrs and anouther 3 hrs and caught both. Our country back there is big and BAD, one area we hunt is 100 sq miles of cut over and creeks with lots of water.
Hope you both can come hunt with us there in March before we have to shut down for Turkey season!
Understand your neighbors are back down this way.
Hope they have better luck than we have had this past week.
Good Running to All!

I do quite a bit of cat hunting myself, where you located at and what kind of hounds do you hunt.
Mr. Clay sounds like you all have some nice hounds. Where do you live? What kind of hounds are you running? I live in southern va. and hunt on the outside myself.
Mr.'s Modlinn & Mcfann
My father is E. Finney Clay originaly of Brenham, TX. He has been cat hunting exclusivly since 1958 and breeding his Clay Dogs since 1968. He does not buy or sell Hounds (except here lately in trying to get a Tree Dog) All of our hounds are line bred Ch. Mark S. hounds with a little Pine Ridge(Fred & Sampson) mixed in(wish there was more!).
We live outside of Hot Springs AR, and Daddy has a camp in Western OK, and one in North FL. He is now 79 and fighting Prostate Cancer and regrets that there are only 7 days and nights a week to hunt.
The latest litter of pupies go bact to Mark S. 159 times in 13 generations, this makes then about 87% of Mark S. Daddy breeds for NOSE and BRAINS the speed and drive will take care of it self if the hounds have grit.
Daddy has caught cat from Mexico, South TX to FL and North to OK and KS. The Bobcats in Central AR and North FL tend to run the best. Some of this is do to the BAD country they have to run in.
Have to go nap up for tonight, we treed one this morning.
So Long and Good Running to All!

Sounds like you got it together. If you want to talk hunting one nite give me a call. 1-757-653-4061. I would like to hear how yal hunt out west.
seems like i'ed like to try a couple of them here in these briars in south ga we have some so thick you cannot **** a pistol in. and you right about nose and brains to run a cat. I think until a person has heard a bobcat race and they get him to turning they really haven't heard hounds run it can truley get rich its like standing beside a train track when a amtrak is coming .
Mr. Mcfann
Where in S. GA and do you know Jr. Aspenwall or Glenn Mullis. Both are good hound men known to Daddy.
Jr. raised a hound named Aspenwalls Buster who was the real deal as to Grey Fox and Bobcats, as good a strike dog as has ever barked.
Who are some other Cat Hunters you know of as I am trying to compile a list, as ther are getting to be fewer and fewer!
Thanks
C. John Clay
C John Clay, I live about 25 mins from u all and we run coyotes but are loaded with cats. I would like for you all bring your hounds and run some of them. I will leave my hounds at home, we have a real good place to hunt. 501-538-4219

Mr clay jr aspenwall good friend of mine he quit hunting cat and fox now all he does is rabbit hunt, glenn mullis known as cat hunter hunt with glenn on a regular basis. There are a few of us outside hunters over here charles tyre is a good friend of mine charles smith hunt with both of these people we basically have close to all the same breeding, Benny Crews Al tootle we do not pen hunt we have a lot of land to hunt over here and all our dogs are broke on grey fox and bobcat .I don't get to hunt as much as i would like to 2 or 3 nights a week .The old buster dog had a few with him in there you right they could smell something had one you think i might be lying but he could smell a bobcat driving down the road a 30 mph done it lots of times he was a real cat hound. But a man wanted him worse than i did so had to let him go .
John I havent met you,but used to see your dad few years back, when some of my cat hunting buddies & myself getting gas at the store in Tenille Fl..or in the woods. Your dad was hunting with John some at that time.Has he still got his hounds? I read where you mentioned some hunter in another state, I thought had all his dogs.Hope he is doing well.AS far as Jr. Asinwall goes last time I talked to him several months back,he still had all of his cat hounds, but wasnt going much & was running some beagles after rabbits. He still had old Mac,which was out of Buster & about 12 other hounds.I have a female off Buster & one dog off the Mac dog now.I Havent talked to Glen lately.Used to talk at least once a week or so.Lots of thinks going on lately.John tell your dad my cat hunting buddy Gene Scott passed away last year.I dont know if he remembers him or not. Tell your dad I said hi.Brian good to hear from you too.Hope you & Charles Tyre are having good running.Tell Charles I said hi.Feel bad I havent talked to Glen lately as he was having more health problems. good hunting Randy Osborne
Brian do you know mr. wainwright? He lives in ga. I have gotten several from him that were real nice. The last one that came from him just recently died. his name was buckshot. He was 100% cat dog wouldnt even mess with a gray. He was off of his best dog that he had. I cant recall his name.
Know rudolph real good we have caught a few cat together and had some fine grey fox races together.rudolph has a small fox pen with nothing in it but greys i have started a pup or to in it he is a fine man not a bad bone in him .
Brian is Glen done taking those medical treatments he was going to have for 30days in a row I think or more?We had talked about meeting and going hunting, but he couldnt get far from home for awhile due to his treatments.I dont know how much you talk to him,but dont think you live to far apart do you?
Randy glenn is doing good he's been hunting regular we went the other night had some good running. cathunter is as tough as they come and thats one man that knows what a dog is suppose to do. and can track a cat down a hard clay road unlike anyone i have ever seen, i almost believe he can smell it, but you know what that is its called experience, they say if you do something long enough you will get good at it.
Brian thanks for the information.I used to keep in contact with him more often.Really got alot going on with my family & job latlely.we talked once a week or so in the past.Been atleast a month or two now.Hope those treatments worked.Think it was for his heart.Your right he is tough for his age & has always been.great hunter.Hope his wife is doing good also as she was having some health issues also.He hasnt called here lately either so I was getting concerned
Brian
What houndS is Charles Tyre running now? I use to hunt a good bit with Charles Tyre. We bred a few hounds back in the day. He bred some really nice gyps to my ole Copper Dog. Its been a long time since I have seen Charles. Heard he got in the stud dog business. I know Charles could raise some fine pups. Me my uncle Preacher Thornton,Charles and ole Barber use to keep em jaded back in the day on the Whitestar.
Mr. Osborne
The Hunter is Glen Rybard of Malvern, AR.
Daddy Gave Glen some of his old Hounds and a couple of started Hounds as well as some puppies.
Glen is a fine Houndsman of the old school. He now has 12 sure nuff CAT Hounds. He ran an old spoiled tomcat last night 3 1/2 hours and caught him. This old tom had been giving us fits for the last 2 years, running in some bad cutovers and up and down some steep banks in a big creek that is always full of water. Glen dogs have matured and fooled the ole Tomcat. He was one that you hated to catch!
Mr. John is supposed to come by this weekend to see us.He still has his dogs and said he is about to start hunting again.
Glad to hear from all you cat hunters as it is a fast fading Sport!
Good Running to All1

hey derek this sounds pretty interesting if they don't mind I would like to go with yall sometime
Mr. Mcfann
Ment to address the previous to you!
We have several huonds that are Buster Grandpups. He went back to Mark S. on his Grandmothers side 3 times.
We Rig hunt our hounds after they empty out road hunting a ways. Two of the Buster bred dogs strike off the top as well as out of the box going down the road.
Lots of Cat hunters say you cant strike off of the top but Glen and Daddy do every night. We have such big country to hunt and Bobcats being what they are (unpredictable) it sure helps us cover more country.
You would think we only strike hot tracts however that is not the case. Over half the tracks struck the Hounds can not smell on the ground. This must be were an ole cat has sat around for a while, or where an old Tom has excreted his marking scent from his anal gland. Here in FL you can always find a track in the sand so you know your dogs are right but at home in the rocks sometimes it is tuff to believe in your hounds when they cant trail the Cat off the road. This probably why more Cathunters don't Rig. You have to have real faith in your Hounds!
Look forward to reading more Bobcat Hunting news and information here!
Thanks to all!

Do yal do most of your hunting at night or in the day? I would love to come down and go with you one time. I have gotten a few dogs from charles also that were right nice. I am always looking somewhere else to go. Up here where we hunt is nothing but bad a** briars and reeds alot of times where we jump our cats.
JOHN, ME AND LUMP ARE PLANNING A TRIP. JUST LET US KNOW WHEN.
Poon you all been doing much, we had a hell of a day last Saturday, jumped at 8:30 and got after several different fox through out the day, dogs stayed on the ground all day, smelling got sorry around 11:00 or so but picked back up at 2:30 and had a great race to the end, we loaded 30 hounds in a couple min. which is when the race ended at 5:20. We ran that fox through the blueberry fields he lined out several times going nearly out of hearing and then came back to home(crawling bay), he did this several times that afternoon. Hounds are still beat from that but we are going in the morning and Sat. and maybe Sun. Might try to get after a Kitty Cat in the morning if the weather isn't any better. Man the wind and humidity has been as sorry as you could get the last few days, the humidity was 12% at 11:00 today. Tell lump and the Hoggards I got Tri-Tronics to fix my collars that were broke and they were not under warranty.
Good luck over the weekend hope you and Barber have a goodun.
Have not heard how you all have done lately?
Getting very dry here, had a little shower yesterday and you can not tell it.
Treed two last night, one pop up cat and one 20 min. race. Snow was there but did not tree. I found one up a Bay Magnolia full of vines but could not shake him out.
I will be back to AR from New Mexico about the 9th or 10th of March. Why don't you all plan on coming then. I will call you and start putting this together. Turkey season will be open in part of our country and we will have to hunt there at night, the others country we will have two more weeks to hunt day and night.
Dad sends his regards, yesterday was his birthday 79. He was knock out from Hunting all night Monday night with Don Moran from Perry, he is the fellow that hunts with Mr. Phelpie and Winslow. Senting conditions have been terrible and they hunted all night and did not do any good.
Have you all heard what kind of luck Mr. Phelpie is having?
Good to hear from you all and are looking forward for a chance to see the BLACKS in action!

BRIAN MCFANN OR RANDY OSBORNE WHERE IS BUSTER NOW OR SOME OF HIS CLOSEST PUPS IAM VERY INTERESTED IN BREEDING SOMETHING TO HIM OR SOME OF THE BEST OFFSPRING PLEASE GIVE ME A CALL 910-308-2732. I LIVE IN ELIZABETHTOWN N.C.
jeff tomcat still hunts in the whitstar, and yes he is in the studdog business he told me wednesday he bought a male dog from wildgoose kennels, something off of knights clyde, don't know anything about any of that stuff, i think he's full of Leon canoys breeding, they say he has a outstanding mouth, we have bred so many of these liquor hounds over here we bout don't have anything left to breed them to with any sense. I will tell charles you asked about him, take care.
John, I have been hunting every weekend but not doing anything. Have not seen a cat track in 2 weeks. Had to call in re-inforcements last sunday afternoon to catch a fox. Got 3 of my ******* in heat and that hurts a lot. Mighty dry here, wind blows all the time, humidity 20%. These black dogs not to good in these conditions on a fox. If could find a cat would probably do better. I can make lots of excuses for sorry dogs.
Is this will cain from white lake.If so this is clint wilson county, whats up.
Mr. Cain
Buster died last year at 13 or 14 years of age in OK with one of Daddys associates. He would strike a cold Cat or Fox and try to trail it right up to the end.
We had to AI him with a vet for the last two litters he sired for us and the last three years he was sterile.
Our Friend who had him was like you all a Fox was good, a Bobcat just better.
I think Mr. Aspenwall still has ole Mack,a Buster son, Mr.Osborne confirmed this, and we hear of some good trailing dogs sired by him.
Hope this helps.
C. John Clay
Mr Cain, Jr. Asinwall lives in odum,Ga.As John said he let some hunters in Ark. get him (Buster) some time back as he was getting some age on him.I think he let them get several other females. One being a female called Gray,I think. He still had a dog called Mac that was out of Buster & Gray. Both had good noses on them.Old Mac is getting age on him now also, but can trial good also.Buster had several litter mates that were real good hounds also.I think they are all deceased now.All of them that I know of Had good noses.Different people owned them.Had a litter mate to him one time & she produced good hounds also.I havent talked to Jr. for awhile, guess he still has him or hasnt died.Jr. wasnt going cat hunting much last time I talked to him.He had started running beagles, but was doing alot of that. His phone number is 912-586-6881 Hope this helps. Randy Osborne
Will call me I have a male hound out of Mack that they are speaking of he came from Mr. Joe Aspenwall, he is a front-end minded hound about 4 and is starting to help us get after fox, lets get together and hunt this week, Wed or Thursday might be good.
Mr. Mcfann, Mr. Dixon, Mr.Modlin, and Gentlemen:
We need a ***** to out cross with that is carrying the old Pine Ridge, Mark S. and or Garnet pedigrees.
Do not seem to be having much luck tracking down anyone who has kept the Pine Ridge line going so sure could use some help.
Mr. Cain another hound who we are hearing good things about is the John Hound that Mr. Charles Smith has. His reputation has made it to AR, and TX., and Mr. Mullis speaks very highly of him. I do not know how he is bred but rumor is that is a "Sure Nuff" Cat Hound.
If any of you all could tell me how John is bred I would appreciate it.
Also if any of you have a ***** that is bred the way I described above that you do not want to sell but might breed, I might can get Daddy to breed to one of our two Studs for a puppy exchange.
Hope all of you are having good running!
C. John Clay
Jr Aspinwall still has Mack, I just bought 4 puppies off of him that are 4 months old. Beautiful pups, and Jr Aspinwall is what dog trading and selling should be about. I bought some beagles from him also that trotted in front of the truck and run the fire out of a rabbit. He still hunts hard, and most of the time all night and part of the day! He was going fox hunting the night I got the puppies. He goes some, but I think he does that during deer season so he does not mess up the deer hunting. He is truly a sportsman, and as good of a man as one can meet. I also know Al Tootle and Charles Tyre very well. Both are very fine fellows. Charles had a dog that you all probably know named Punch....they have alot of pups off Punch between him and Al. They both fox hunt my club. I am after them now about a pup now to raise that hopefully I can cross with one of Jr's pups.
Mr clay John is out of tyres straight Bourbon and tootles pearl Old bourbon has the best nose i have ever seen on a walker hound with a clear mouth a real trail dog that can get glued to it. Bourbon would trail a cat at 8 months old the reason i no is i found the track charles told me on the radio that he wanted to show me something and he did. right now i have 3 gyps 2 being straight off bourbon and 1 being off of johns sister tyres dixie t a real fine gyp pearl was as good a gyp as they come. Every thing we hunt with over here goes back on that line real fox dogs do breed on .
Interested on the breed for cat hunting and grey fox out west 541coast 643-6976
Jeff I've never spoke with you but i talked to your father a few years back. I hope your father is doing well, tell him I said hello. I own a hound that came from yall registered as "Thornton's Copper II". He has sure been a fine hound for me. Loaded with fox sense, he is broke and wont run a goat or coyote. I dont run many cats, mainly greys. But he has tasted both. I bred him and have some pups off him that will be 2 in november and they have showed hardly no interest in deer and can already help you get one up. Im going to be breeding Copper some more this year hopefully, I wish I had more of the blood up this way. Wish I had a gyp something close to his breeding to stick him to!
Got a male dog out of Tyre Straight Bourbon and Mincey's Fly By that i like a lot He is Solid Deer Proof will Trail A Fox or Cat with that Great Liquor Mouth and will Pressure him after he puts him to run. I placed him at this years Broke Dog Hunt and have 1 litter on the ground off him and a Hunter Harris GYp and have 2 more bred 2 him. A Murphy Big John Gyp and a Tripps Radar Gyp. Poon's Soony dog is off Radar. Anyone interested in Breeding True Fox or Cathounds to him all i want is a Puppy as this is my Hobby. Phone Number 252 325 0460
do you have to break these dogs off deer or are they born deer proof. also, do you think these dogs would work running coyotes. thanks for your time
We have to Break most of them and my Male Dog Loves a Yote but I like running them also. Where i hunt now days if you didn't run Yotes a lot of days you would not run anything. Years ago we hated Red Foxes and now we wish we had some to Run.
Brian
How many crosses of Thorntons Coppertop is in the John hound? Im sure he has several, talking about breeding on. The Copper Dog threw some Outstanding cat hounds in this country and they are still breeding on. I know Bob Osteen had many and said they were the best he ever put a collar on.
Jeff I know he has 2 one on top and on the bottom. I owned johns grand ma , she has one i know and old lobo has 1 but pearl i dont no i have a gyp thats off tyres dixie which is johns littermate but all she is , is litter enrolled her being off wilsons punch X tyres dixie t , a nice gyp, i was looking thru all my papers and everything i own he's there 2 sometimes 3 crosses . we all have basically the same stuff, owned a lot of hounds in my lifetime, but have never seen hounds breed on like these, had a lot of them and you can say one thing if u stay on that line most of the time the whole litter will turn out and won,t be trashy .with those exciting liquor mouths, the only way to go
I dont have any of those reg. gyps from down south any more. They all died out. Tried raising some pups and didnt have any luck, guess i waited until they were to old. Most of what i have here now is grade dogs that I have raised. Most of the bloodline goes back to "Poor Sams" and Whit Mizelles stock which both of them are in eastern N.C. Got a real B***ch here that has helped me jump and trail several cats this year I plan on breeding when ever she comes in. She can smell a cat before most dogs ever think about smelling it. She is just as good as any I have hunted with in my opinion, and she was corrected one time for running a deer and hasnt run one since and I am in deer country! I will be glad to let you get a pu if she has good luck.
Mr. Mcfann, thanks for the information on John. Daddys cathunting freind here at Perry has bought two pups by him and as his reputation is so good I wondered how he is bred. Thanks again!
Mr. Modlin, and Mr. Mcfann hope to get Daddy up through yalls country later this spring as we are to go to Maryland to look at some Hounds. Always glad to see good hounds.
Mr. Modlin do you know Ed Corker. Mr. Corker used to have Hounds bred the way ours are, but has gone different directions as his sport has evolved.
Poon and Lump, We finally got a break in the weather yesterday after 4 days of low humidity and East winds.
We had hunted morning and night Sat., Sun., and Mon. when all we could do is strike and cold trail. One Cat we hit as he evidently was starting to feed and trailed him over 3 1/2 miles till he came out and hit a sandy road and that was it.
Yesterday we started at 7am and rigged and road hunted till about 4pm when we took a hour nap. While napping the wind changed to the Southwest. We started back to rigging and struck within 30min. Rita and Ruby trailed him about 30min. jumped and we had a H##%& of a 1hr 5min Cat race and caught him on the ground, a 27lb tomcat.
We loaded the Hounds and put the Rig dogs up and started out of the Club and struck again within a mile. That one we trailed for 1hr and jumped, ran him 20min and he went up.
Lump, Snow did not tree but she sure can trail and got several pick ups. We had a freind visiting from Louisiana who said how much he wanted Snow, so she is headed further west.
Sure is nice to see Cathunters using this forum to keep in touch!
Poon and Lump I will call when I get back from NM Lion Hunting and look forward to seeing you all in March!
Good Running to All.
C. John Clay
Mr. Clay I dont know Mr. Corker but i am like you always ready to meet new people and look at different dogs. If you are coming to maryland you will coming right thru my area. You should give me a call when you come up this way and I only live about 1 hour and 30 min from poon. We are finally getting some rain today finally! I was jumping just about every cat i trailed in Jan when we had moisture but in Feb. it has turned off dry as a bone making hunting SORRY! Cant wait to get off work in the a.m to go look for a track!
OK, John we are looking forward to coming out there. Hunting remains to be mighty sorry for me. Ganged up saturday with some of the bertie boys and managed to tackle a 30LB tom. Might of ran 10 minutes. Caught on the ground. We were fox hunting when they jumped the cat. To many dogs for a cat race. Probably had 45 head. Cats can't stand that many. Sounded good while it lasted.
Mr. Osborne,
Mr. John called today to come see Daddy but we had already left for home, he said he had hunted this morning but had not done any good.
Poon hope you and Lump had good running yesterday You all were in our thoughts during our 16 hr drive.
Picked up a Treedog prospect on the way home. Will be a project but a real nice gyp that trees, maybe!
Have 5 nice puppies that are two weeks old. Wife and daughter have them in the House as winter still has a grip on AR.
A Friend is coming up from LA. to hunt Daddy some while I am gone, as Lump knows thqt is all he wants to do!
Good Running to All
C. John Clay
John, had a good cat race saturday. Treed twice. Dogs nailed him both times. Caught a fox this morning.Had a real good race.
Poon,
Be sure and don't forget that tree dog when you come this way! We have two cats that need to be removed from the gene pool. They run 5 min or so then pop up!
We may have a tree dog but we can use yours to tell!
Lump, Ole Snow was the real deal. She can trail with Rita and get her share of pickups on a ducking cat. She may have started treeing for us once she got used to our hounds, but she missed two cats in the daylight.
Our friend from LA needed her bad so he took her. We also got him two more older hounds and should have put him back in the cat hound buisness. So, many thanks to you for letting us have her!!!
Wasting my time going Lion hunting, but have a freind who wants to show us how his hounds work. Not a lot of snow where we are going in NM. so Lion hunting can be a hit or miss deal.
Glad you all had good sport!See Ya soon!
C. John Clay
John, any idea of dates we need to be there? I have to schedule to be off work.
John, also them popups will be in a hell of a bind.
Poon, I am in NM Lion Hunting. Windy and DRY here. We have found game but having a tough time getting one up and running.
Daddy and I got back to AR last Sat. and we spent all day at the hospital with daddy. His ol stomack was bothering him but Dr.'s determined it was due to his Chemo and not Cancer spreading!
I will be home about Wed. or Thur. & will call, but you might pencil in the 3rd or 4th week of March!
Hope you all have had good running!

Enjoyed the phone conversation on Monday!
It is nice to talk to Bobcat hunters anytime.
You can sure be proud to own the Bourbon Hound.

I HAVE NOT BEEN HUNTING LATELY. I PLAN ON GOING TOMORROW WHICH IS FRIDAY. I MIGHT GET LUCKY AND JUMP A CAT OR OLD SICK FOX. POON AND I ARE READY TO GO HUNTING WITH YA'LL YOUNG MEN. I HOPE YOUR POPS IS DOING WELL AND HE SAVES ONE OLD SICK CAT FOR POON AND I. I HOPE THEM CATS ARE TOUGHER THAN THE ONES DOWN HERE BECAUSE POON HAS THE BLACK POWER AND I WANT ONE CAT TO OUT SMART HIM WHILE WE ARE UP THERE SO WE CAN LAUGH ON THE WAY HOME. ME AND POON DON'T HUNT TOGETHER AS WE USE TO BECAUSE GAME DON'T STAND A CHANCE.
Poon & Lump,
Just got home and put the Hounds up, had a long night.
This was the first time Dad has been hunting with his dogs since we got home from FL. We hunted from 7:30pm till 11pm, rigged 3 cold cats.
We could not get a bark on the ground from.
Then just before I could put the rig dogs back in the box to go home Ole Rubby struck again. She switched for a long time and finaly found where he left the road. She and two young dogs trailed the cat for about 30min and jumped him. The cat went to a big creek and gave them fits for two hours, but they finaly put him out of the water. Then the ole cat went over a mountain and out of our hearing, when we found them they had put him up.
I will call you both this evening to firm up plans for the end of the month! We are looking forward to seeing the Black Power in action!
C. John Clay
PS Stick to Bobcats and Fox as Mt. Lions are WORK!!!!
Lump and John, ya'll got me laughing. Am looking forward to the trip. Hope the Black Power does not let me down.
