Was interested in some getting some new stock in my kennels and was wondering what yalls opinions were on the bloodlines I had in mind. Looking for the bloodlines that'll make deer heathens and that'll punish a deer and have the smarts to run him right...all of which I know a big role is in how the houndsman trains a hound of course. Anyway the lines I'm looking at are Webbs Duece, Hellums, Hills, and Brokerite 30...what's yalls thoughts and ranking on which breed would make great deer hounds?
Ken, My opinion probably won't get you much other than two cents and a cup of coffee, but I am a strong believer that most dogs today have had the hunt bred out of them in a "trade off" for speed. Don't get me wrong, speed is a plus. The dog you are describing that you want is one with some nose and a true track runner. Senator Sam or Singing Sam along with Clown bred hounds are hard to beat on deer. These dogs are not the fastest dogs out there but if you want a track runner that will hold true to the track and a dog with hunt that will jump that deer for you on that warm day or afternoon when smelling conditions are marginal these are the type of hounds I want in my box. Looking forward to seeing everyone's opinion on your post on their favorite type of breeding for deer.
Did you ever see Clown run! One of the fastest I have ever seen, but I have always hunted piddlers. Not trying to be funny but saw Clown lead speed & drive I believe at 6&1/2 yrs. old at Sand Sifter. Dash Rip Rock was a great producer as Clown was. Lots of other great producers, but these were 2 of the best,
I had several off goose marsh cotton that I run with any one full sister to high cotton rock and flat smoke a deer jump and be a front wish I could find some young dogs close to this cross and water curdowns don't matter and. Had some good ones of hellums breed and one of the best was off woods smoking joe
I had rocks full sister small dog runt of litter I love have again car hit here and I lost interest then trying to get back in it I seen what's worked for me in Georgia South Carolina North Carolina river swamps to cutdown like in green swamp she loved green swamp they all seem to b hard hunters with good speed and noses on them
