You might try putting him on Glucosemine tablets or capsules.
This should help reduce the inflammation, and if you keep him on them, may prevent the swelling from returning.
I had it do wonders for one of mine, but after about 6 months took him off of it. Had some minor swelling after that but it did not seem to slow him down!
