    sick pups - please help!!

I have a litter of 5 pups that some have gotten sick and some have not. They have been given 2 of their puppy shots. I sure that it is coccidian and not parvo. I had 3 pups get sick to start with and 2 showed no signs of being sick. A friend of mine gave me some generic albon and it cured 2 of the 3 completely. One of them got a little better but he just never has gained any weight and now one of the 2 that did not get sick is losing weight. This has been going on for almost 2 weeks now. I bought some Corid powder today but I don't know how I need to use it. Can some of you guys give me some help on this? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks Tim Cherry

Re: sick pups - please help!!

Tim, The Powder is many times more potent than the liquid Albon,,,When I was raising a lot of puppy's it was the product of choice for me.

You can mix it in a small jar and give it to the puppy's by mouth (Which I encourage) Also I cut down a 5 gallon bucket which was about neck high on a 5 week old puppy and mix it fresh in that water everyday.

I once had a litter that kept getting reinfected and could not figure why.
Treat there mom if still nursing also..............But the reinfection turned out to be a feeder that I had permantly mounted in the brood box. Filled it up thru the roof of brood box,,,,I could not sterilize the inside of feeder. So when I pulled it out the infection stopped and all was well for that litter.
Good Luck and stay on it.........

Re: sick pups - please help!!

How much powder do I put in a jar? The packet has 10 ounces and it make 250 gallons. I don't want to overdose them.

Re: sick pups - please help!!

Di- methodox cattle drug I use injectable but I give it by mouth. It has 40% sulfmethdoxine key ingredint in albond. Regular albond only has 5%. Also cocidi. Can not be clear after 1 treatment sometimes. Vet told me if never clear up or reacur treat for 7 days second time. This drug, do not give over 1/2cc first day 1/4cc day 2-7. It's nasty tasting will cause. Foaming mouth . I give mine with dyne. Or milk. You can get it at H&H in PinkHill or Dail bothers in Keansville. 125 ml bottle will last for ever. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: sick pups - please help!!

I believe it is 1 teaspoon per 2 gallons of water, but you can go on the corrid website and look it up far as prevention and treatment I believe. We had a rough go round with it last year and this cured all of ours.

Re: sick pups - please help!! - Update

Well it's not looking so good for one of my pups and the other does not seem to be getting any better or worse at this time. I had a friend give me some albon and I gave them a dose late yesterday and a dose this morning. I also gave the some panacure as I was worming them with sa***uard and not sure if I was missing something with it. The one that is doing worse has no appetite and does not seem to be drinking. I have been giving her some dyne and gatorade down the throat. They will not eat mackerel, canned food or anything else. I had one that had a very lose brown stool last night. The other ones that I saw looked black before. I appreciate all the guys that have tried to help me with whatever I have going on here. I have had a hard time finding anywhere that sold anything that most of you guys have suggested. It being the Fourth of July weekend did not help. Two of the first ones that got sick originally have bounced back and acting as nothing has ever been wrong with them. These last 2 just cannot seem to shake what they have. If anyone has any more suggestions, I will appreciate any input.

    Thanks Tim Cherry

Re: sick pups - please help!! - Update

Had a litter get sick last year same way took one of them 3 weeks of forced Gatorade and dyne to get straight hard row to hoe so now I put corid in their water helps prevent cocidiosis of course Albion is the treatment if u have it actively but dyne works wonders keeping them going my vet tested mine had a high wbc count but she couldn't find the source so I took them home and saved them and me

Re: sick pups - please help!! - Update

You have Albon,,,,,,,,,,,Treat according to directions,,,Mix your Corrid in there water for the next several weeks. (unless you have another product like corrid for the water ,,then mix that..Watch out for reinfection after they turn around....

In your first post you say this is going on for two weeks are you sterilizing the place they stay?

    Good Luck

Re: sick pups - please help!! - Update

No Gary I have not disinfected the pen as I have kept them in this pen the whole time. I lost one of them yesterday but I have one that has been sick for most of 2 weeks. I stopped treating him for 3 or 4 days as I thought he was getting better but he did not gain back any weight. I see now that was a major mistake on my part. He took a turn for the worse and one of the others that had not been sick got bad off and died in 2 days. I am putting Corid in the 3 healthy pips water now. They all seem to be completely over their sickness. This is the first time I have had to deal with anything like this in the 30 years I have had hounds. I have had a lot people try to help me with this and I really appreciate it so much. I will take him out of the pen and bleach it out heavily. Maybe that will help. Heck it can't hurt. Thanks again.

Re: sick pups - please help!!

Fenbendazole(Pancur,Sa***aurd) is used to treat Coccidiosis as are Sulfa drugs such as Albon and Sulmet. Treatment usually runs 5-7 days. I use Sulmet in the water as a preventative and worm with Sa***uard after 7 weeks old. Coccidia is a protozoan and the cyst(eggs) are nearly impossible to destroy in the environment. As a dogs gets older its immune system helps keep the protozoans under control.

I'm a little stumped being you were using Pancur, especially if given several days in a row. I know I was under estimating the weights of some pups/dogs when worming/medicating them, so I started weighing them. I use a basket/bucket and a digital scale (fish/deer scale) that I know is accurate. I was advised to increase the weight by 20% when using Fenbendazole. This has helped me. I wish you luck on the remaining pups.

Re: sick pups - please help!!

I stand corrected Clorox is not effective for disinfecting for coccidiosis, but ammonia such a Lysol is.

Re: sick pups - please help!!

Darron I have been using sa***uard for a couple of years and have never had anything like this to deal with. It was suggested to me to try the panacure to make sure It was not a worm problem. I finally got my hands on some Albon late Saturday to give to them. I have had a hard time locating any sulmed or any of the sulfa based products in or around Goldsboro. I lost one late yesterday and I have one more that is sick. He looks like walking death. He is not eating much of anything. I have tried chicken and mackerel. I am currently pouring a dyne and Gatorade mixture down his throat. He had a black semi solid stool this morning. That is the first time in over 2 weeks that it has been anything but water constituency. He is very week and I hope that he may be on his way to recovery. I have made some mistakes dealing with this mess but I have learned a lot. I current have been putting Corid in the water of the 3 that are doing great. I will continue this for at least 21 days. I appreciate all the advice and welcome any more that y'all have to offer. Thanks again guys!!

Re: sick pups - please help!!

    Tim,
I might have missed it in the early part of the post, but everyone seems to be assuming its a coccidiosis problem. The symptoms you describe are also identical to a problem I have with my pups consistently that comes through ground water called giardia. It's a parasite that's treated with metrodonizole or Primor. You might try putting them on cheap distilled water and giving them one of those meds if nothing else works. Just a thought.

Re: sick pups - please help!!

Will I was assuming to it was coccdia but it may have been something else like giardia. I lost both of the last 2 that got sick and have two that seem to be back to normal. One of the the ones that died stayed sick for most of two weeks. He got better for 4 or 5 days and then took a turn for the worse. The other that died got sick and died in a couple of days. They got sick late Thursday and with the holiday weekend it was hard to find medicine in my area. I had some friends reach out to me with medicine and suggestions and I really appreciate all the help. I am currently putting Corid in the water for the 3 healthy pups. I sure wish I knew what it was so I could try to prevent it in the future.

    Thanks again guys

Re: sick pups - please help!!

TIM , I THINK WE MISSED THIS ALL TOGETHER ITS PROABLY HOOK OR WHIP WORMS ,I KNOW U HAVE WORMED THEM BUT I HAVE SEEN SOME BUILD UP IMMUNITY TO THESE THINGS THAT WE ALL USE ,YOU NEED TO GO TO ANOTHER WORMER ,SAD THING IS A VET TRIP WOULDA PROABLY SAVED EM AND CUT OUT ALL THIS SPECULATION --DAVID BAILEY

Re: sick pups - please help!!

David you may be right. I have never seen 3 get sick at the same time from worms. They were all throwing up and had lose black stools. Two of the 3 that were sick at first have gotten better and seem to be doing just fine. I have been using sa***uard does anyone have a suggestion as to what I need to worm these puppies with? The stuff you gave me seemed to work and the one that died got better but just never could put weight on him and he got sick a second time. Then one of the ones hat did not get sick at first got sick and went down very fast. Thanks so much for your help.

Re: sick pups - please help!!

DRONTAL WILL DO THE JOB THE BEST WORMER YOU CAN GET

Re: sick pups - please help!!

DRONTAL PLUS IS A GOOD ONE BUT ITS BASE FOR HOOKS AND WHIPS IS PYRANTEL PANOMATE --SENTIENAL IS THE BEST HOOK WORMER OUT THERE -DB

Re: sick pups - please help!!

Tim I had a litter if pups do like this one time and gave them albon just as needed and all died but 2 and I think the shots I gave were bad. Black stool sounds like it could have been Parvo but I could be totally wrong just another thought

Re: sick pups - please help!!

Well guys had a friend that got a littermate from me about 5 weeks ago. His got sick and died over the weekend. He did get her to the vet late Friday and he was told that she did have coccidia. But she was severely infested with hook worms. The vet told him that when pups get sick with coccidia that it weakens them down and the hook worms take over. She said that most people are not worming their puppies long enough. She suggested 10-12 days instead of 3 days in a row. This seemed to be what was the issue with my pups. I was so focused on the coccidia that I was not treating them enough for hook worms. I am putting Corid in my remaining pups water every day and will until they are at least 6 months old and will worm them for at least 10 days in a row. They look so much better than they did 3 weeks ago. I have raised pups for over 25 years and never had issues like this come up. I sure learned a lot and I hope it helps some of you guys in the future.

Thanks for all the friends of
speeddogs for all your help and concern,

Re: sick pups - please help!!

Thanks for keeping us undated I know this experience may have help a lot of us

Re: sick pups - please help!!

    WORMS IS CAUSING YOUR PROBLEM

Re: sick pups - please help!!

You are correct. But it all started with the coccidia. I was so focused on the coccidia that I was not worming them with a heavy enough dose and a long enough period. I know now what I should have done and I am putting it on here for other people to learn from my mistakes. I had a lot of people try to help me and I really appreciated it.
