Isle of Wight County will have a public hearing on changing the current ordinance concerning tethering (chaining) dogs on Thursday August 16 @ 7 P.M. at the Courthouse. There are some pushing for a 100% complete ban on tethering a dog while others are pushing for a 19 hour limit on tethering. We all know a properly tethered dog is more humane than keeping a dog in an un-shaded kennel but we have got to help our Supervisors understand this fact! Get the word out, call your Board of Supervisor Representitive, call and e mail each and every one of them!! Education is the key here. There are laws on the books right now that address inhumane treatment of dogs and other animals. We as hound owners know full well if we bury a cinder block in the ground with the chain attached, the dog maintains 360 degree mobility, placing shelter within 4' of the collar end of the chain allows them to get inside their house. Water MUST be available AT ALL TIMES. Tethering any dog in a shaded area as specified above is much more humane than putting one in a 10 x 10 kennel that is in full sun all day long. Make the calls, send the e mails, educate the unbelievers and attend the hearing on August 16 @ 7 P.M. Give them an inch, they will take a mile. We have got to beat this back now!!!
