"Three year old Haley Duffer, daughter of Harvey and Rhonda Duffer of Chase City, was diagnosed at Duke University Hospital in December 2010 with a rare genetic disorder called Leukodystrophy.

Leukodystrophy is an autosomal recessive genetic defect. This means that both males and females can carry the gene but both parents need to carry the defective gene in order to have an affected child. This disorder is very rare and is estimated that the carrier defect occurs in the general population at 1 in every 100 people and the affected birth rate is 1 in every 100,000.

A person that is affected with Leukodystrophy has a lack of enzyme in their blood without this enzyme, sulfatides are not broken down and instead build-up in the white matter of the brain and the central nervous system causing destruction of the myelin sheath. Without an intact of myelin sheath there is a breakdown in communication between the nerves and the brain. This breakdown will eventually cause Haley to lose such functions as the ability to walk, speech, paralysis, blindness, seizures and then death.

This disease progresses rapidly and there is very little treatment. There is no cure, only hope that one day a cure will be found and it’s not too late for Haley.

Haley’s parents would like to extend their deepest appreciation for all the love and prayers they have received throughout their community. This has been a devastating diagnosis but we do believe in miracles."
