pattern library vs design system

I really liked how you explained the difference between design systems and pattern libraries — especially the idea of the design system being the “umbrella” that holds everything together. In practice, though, where do you think most teams struggle the most when trying to evolve from just having a pattern library to building a fully mature design system? Is it usually about getting alignment, governance, or maintaining consistency across teams?

Re: pattern library vs design system

This piece from Clay (pattern library vs design system) does a solid job of distinguishing between pattern libraries and full design systems. I especially liked how you describe a design system as the umbrella that contains tokens, guidelines, governance, and more — whereas a pattern library is the set of reusable parts under that umbrella. That metaphor really stuck with me. It’s a great reference to share with colleagues who sometimes mix them up. Thanks for the breakdown — it feels less intimidating now.
