If Emerson were to rejoin the living and put Thibodaux to the test he suggests above on Sunday, he would give us a mixed review.
On one hand, he would see some ranting lunatics shouting about homosexuals and Catholics beating a clear path to hell.
And on the other, he would see the peaceful and good residents of Thibodaux, calmly entering their houses of worship despite the disruptive actions of publicity mongering hate groups.
There is no doubt which group better represents the type of “man the country turns out.”
We have written about the past actions and present speech of 
Fred Phelps, pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan.
He will lead protests against six local churches on Sunday, and will be at Nicholls State University on Monday.
Why?
Because a group of students at Nicholls formed a Gay Straight Alliance.
Phelps and his clueless followers embrace a fanatical kind of religion that can fairly be described as a doctrine of hate.
It is a formal endorsement of hatred as the tool of God.
Among the statements contained on his Web site (and these are only the ones tame enough to appear in a family newspaper): “Only a blind, brain-damaged idiot could possibly fail to see that John Paul II is the exact opposite from Peter in doctrine and conduct.” “All 1 billion + Roman Catholics - without a single exception - are irreversibly bound for Hell.”
And there are others.
These folks really are amazing. The depth and breadth of their hatred and zealotry is almost unbelievable.
One person here in the office said the Web site made him feel dirty after he looked over the contents. We agreed in the newsroom that that was a perfect description.
Aside from the streams of filthy language and condemnations, there are spooky propaganda tools on the site.
There are numerous links to photographs showing children and teens smiling ghoulishly as they model shirts saying “God hates fags” and “God hates America.”
Nicholls had a bit of bad luck in that the alliance’s formation came shortly before Pope John Paul II’s recent death.
If there are two things Phelps hates, they are Catholics and homosexuals.
In fact, the group’s visit will be “… to celebrate Pope John Paul II’s second full week in Hell by picketing the sodomite *****houses masquerading as St. Luke Catholic and St. Joseph Co-Cathedral …”
How’s that for doing God’s work?
The test here is not whether our strong community can withstand the presence of this radical group of hate-mongers. We can.
Rather, it will be whether we can go about our business Sunday and Monday without engaging them on their own level.
We know how ridiculous they are and that is enough.
We can pray for them.
We can ignore them
But we cannot argue with them. What good would it do?
They obviously have minds that are incapable of yielding to logic or compassion ó two of society’s vital attributes.
It will be hard to walk past these folks Sunday, but I know we can do it. We are better than that, after all.
They are just putting us to Emerson’s test. We will pass.

Fred Phelps, pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church stayed home while his crew talk to themself cause we did not pay them no mind as we attend church Thibodaux really sent his church a message that you can bark but we will not let you bite us good job my Thibodaux People now lets see what us students could do to put the sugar on the cake that yes you can come and protest but we donot have to hear you with your rainbow looking signs the thibodaux police should have charge Westboro Baptist Church with showing porn looking signs the young childern well my friends I be at my parents house on Monday April 18 so keep your guards up and we are doing a good job wish I could join you but when the leader stays home the followers chill which I have ask them just chill he got 30 mins let University Police take command and to my non-followers I expect everyone to surrender their desire to take action to University Police plus if we as students do fight we would get kick out of the University and unlike the past fights that student life pardon Lets just say you fight with Pastor Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Church on April 18 ,2005 in front of everybody lets just say their is no Pardons you will be kick out of Nicholls State University plus the Lafourche Parish DA office will make sure no charges are drop which means you will be serveing 5 years so its your choice but please donot test the system if Donell Thomas Brown staying home trust me its not out of fear but its cause I want to earn my Masters and trust me Nicholls State University is worst than the mafia you make shame of them and they will get you when you least expect if that donot put fear in you then ask yourself what would Jesus do the answer is Pray AT Home or in his Dorm
