Which type of clematis to grow?

Can anyone advise met which type of clematis to grow in wet, clay soil? I would like to grow a colourful, free flowering clematis along a 6' larchlap wooden fence. Ideally I would like it to be a summer flowering one. Is there one that would survive in this type of soil.

Re: Which type of clematis to grow?

There's a good rule for clematis, cool roots with the top in sun. Clay soil generally remains cool so as long as the top is in sun you should be OK.

I've grown a couple of clematis in thick clay and they did just fine. The varieties were Niobe and the President, both came up as regular as clockwork.

Good luck.
