SOS Apple tree

New house, lone apple tree, branches covered in green, fungus-like growth. Can someone tell me what it is and what I should do about it? The tree produced large, yellow apples last year.

Re: SOS Apple tree

Damp induced infection is my guess. And luckily enough you have time to do something about it. Prune according to the GardenAction pages and make especially sure to prune the centre of the tree to allow air circulation.

If the area around the tree is damp, take a fork and prod into the surrounding soil. Then spread sharp sand and brush it in.

Good luck.
