raspberry canes

Help ! I am growing reaspberries for the first time. I bought canes last autumn, planted them and cut to about 9". This year I got a few rasps from those canes and then new canes began to grow (green) which I understand will bear next year berries. However these canes are now about 5 feet high and have started to produce flower buds ! Should I just cut these off ?
Confused

Re: raspberry canes

Depends, are they summer or autumn fruiting raspberries?

Re: raspberry canes

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply, the canes are summer fruiting and were bought from a local reputable source.

Re: raspberry canes

Hmm. If they have flowers on them I'd cut them down again. It's a bit late in the year for summer fruiting ones but that's what I'd would do.

The alternative is to cut half of them down and see what happens next year. It sounds like they haven't quite caught up with the initial planting.
