runner beans and holiday

I've left my runner beans while I go on a 2 week summer holiday before and they have a load of massive 'wooden' runner beans hanging from them when I get back - no use to anyone.
I was wondering this year if I could trim them back to about 1.5m high and give them a good feed/water to see if they will re-sprout and give a second crop.
Anyone tried this?

Re: runner beans and holiday

Hi

I don't think that cutting them back will make much difference. Once the beans start to grow the plant stops growing.

Having said that, Ive never tried. Why not experiment. Try your plan out on half the beans and see what happens?

Re: runner beans and holiday

well, it kind of worked. I chopped them to about 3 feet high just before I went and they now have small beans on them again (and plenty of flowers). I guess the down side is that it took longer than I was anticipating and I'm not sure how many I'll get before the 1st frosts arrive.
But on the + side it's more beans from a set of plants that had finished so that's good.
