I've left my runner beans while I go on a 2 week summer holiday before and they have a load of massive 'wooden' runner beans hanging from them when I get back - no use to anyone.
I was wondering this year if I could trim them back to about 1.5m high and give them a good feed/water to see if they will re-sprout and give a second crop.
Anyone tried this?
well, it kind of worked. I chopped them to about 3 feet high just before I went and they now have small beans on them again (and plenty of flowers). I guess the down side is that it took longer than I was anticipating and I'm not sure how many I'll get before the 1st frosts arrive.
But on the + side it's more beans from a set of plants that had finished so that's good.
