Watering A Plum Tree

I rencently planted a plum tree which i have been watering daily. Green shoots have been coming out and i have noticed two Leafs growing and today i checked the outher gree buds and they have gone. I have planeted the plum tree in compost and is east facing. I do water every day till the the water is logged. Am i doing something wrong. Thanks in advance.

Re: Watering A Plum Tree

Hi Gav,

I'm not sure what the problem is but I am sure that watering, even a new one, every day until the ground is waterlogged is not a good idea. In warm and dry weather I would water the tree only every couple of weeks. If there has been rain, no watering at all.

Re: Watering A Plum Tree

Hello Gay, the fact that the tree is open to the east already means that it won't be consuming very much water and it will be exposed to cold winds. Waterlogging is not good for any fruit tree, unless it is growing very vigorously or has a large canopy- in a south facing position.

Try mulching intead of over watering and prune it while it's growing well (in June) to stimulate growth and ensure that it doesn't catch silver-leaf fungus.
