Bay Laurel

I have purchased a Bay Laurel tree about a year ago. It is potted, and has been a houseplant since then. About 6 months ago a new shoot has sprouted close to the main trunk, and a new one is visible at this time again (does that mean that I have a female tree?). I am not sure if they are suckers or not, but I don’t think they do any good to the main tree. It is November, I live in USA, and I don’t know if it a good time to dig these new sprouts up or not. If it is a good time, how do I do it without stressing the main tree? Can you please advise? The young shoots look too good just to be cut away, and I would like to have them potted and make them nice gifts for the holydays. Thanks
