I have inherited a couple of freestanding espalier apple trees which look quite mature and have lots of new whippy top growth. I've just discovered that they should have been pruned in August (I was waiting till mid-winter, as for a normal tree). Should I tackle the pruning now, or should I wait till next summer? Any advice would be much appreciated!
