Blackening of tender shoots and leaves in the April/May period is not usually caused by frost, but by the sun burning the frozen leaves etc.
A friend in Norfolk, knowing that frost was forecast for the morning, got up at 4.00am to spray water on 1/2 an acre of potatoes to wash off the frost before the sunrise. It saved his crop.
