Hi, I have a Plum tree that's 6-7 years old. Last year it produced a good crop of Plums. This year it started out with a good crop then things went down hill. The fruit started to fall off with the slightest wind, and the leaves started to get holes and is looking ill. I did notice alot of small black ants all over the tree. Also alot of small black egg shaped clusters on the branches. Can any one give suggestions on my problem, Thanks Joe from Mich.
Sounds like an attack by insects, maybe greenfly or blackfly. The ants are farming the uinsects on the tree which keeps the number of insects down but enough to cause the tree problems. If the tree is small enough, spray it with an insecticide.
The tree has been atttacked and reacted badly possibly because it's not too healthy. Ensure it is well- waterd. scatter some bonemal (or fish, blood and bone meal) around, but not touching, them trunk. Mulch well with well-rotted garden compost. Good luck
