James what you said was catchin this and that in thirty minutes.Im not sure what this or that you were talking about but as long as I have been hunting I have never seen a cat called to a road.I suppose you think because a man uses a call he doesnt have anything to jump a fox and that is where you are wrong.Everyone I know that uses a call can move a fox without one.Its not something that is used exclusively, mostly when daylight is running out and there is still time for one more if you can get after him quick.Yes I can read and I write a bit too and I have been in this ballgame for quite sometime.I have a good idea whats going on!
I respect anyone who WANTS to hunt outside with broke dogs and likes the old fashionedway. BUT 2009 is NOT very old fashioned. With all types of technology to enhance hunting, along comes the "predator fad". Using the tape to shoot game at night. Now I dont know how long I can hold my status of a "foxhunter" being out of the business and all, but IF you foxhunt on the outside, and you are against using a tape, you obviously dont live where its over-populated with hunters. I foxhunted and had some dang good ones to get after a fox with and to run him with. I caught plenty of foxes, with and without help. I too have never called a bobcat with a tape. But I tell you why you should use them too your benefit. Wherever you foxhunt, if there are night time predator shooters in your area, EVERY fox you call out with that tape is one that will be RELUCTANT to return to the sound of that tape in the near future. Which in turn is one a predator hunter wont get. And for you fellers who think its cheating, well I guess you'd wait an hour after seeing a fresh fox first thing in the morning to see if you could trail him up??? I KNEW I could trail one, because we kept the fox population so beat down, thats all we did some days...TRAIL! Sometimes a "cheater" wont so bad.
QUOTE FROM BUBBA CASPER - TRAILING IS ALOT LIKE HUGGING AND KISSING, A FEW MINUTES OF THAT MESS AND I'M READY TO GET DOWN TO BUSINESS!!!! Well said my good friend.
Dont rely on the tape to jump all your foxes but play that jukebox more and less fox will get shot! I guarantee. Good hunting to all
Never tried using a tape to call one up and run, but I dont think I am against it. Have used it to call in the evening to see if foxes are around a place before, but I dont hunt at night so it didnt help me jump him, just let me know what might be there. Different strokes for different folks. Been plenty of days without jumping a fox, but I personally dont call them in Most of my hunting friends dont keep broke dogs, so I try not to be too judgemental of how everyone else does it. But I do enjoy a good trailing dog or group of dogs long as they pull up and stay up when its time, and Im positive I have a couple in my pack some wouldnt want, and Im sure everyone has a couple in their pack wouldnt suit me either.
Around here that's called fire lighting. I understand your thinking Rooster about making um gun shy. The man asked my opinion so I gave it to him. Its a shame that you got to put up with the night shooting and all. I know that that has got to be aggrivating, but I play the JUKEBOX at the WATERING HOLE down the road. I'll keep my tradional behind in the past and take the good days with the bad. Sometimes you need a little bad to make you feel the good.
Been hunting in the rain all day. Ain't done nothing. Struck a fox this morning, trailed to the road and think he was on the other side. Can't hunt there. Even tried ole Rat but he could not get after anything either.
SO............IT SEEMS I HAIRLIPED THE WORLD! ...I'LL NEVER AGREE WITH PLAYING A TAPE AT DAYLITE ON A PERFECT MORNING TO HUNT....AND HAVE BEEN A PART OF THEM....DO I CARE TO...NO....WILL I BRAG ON ONE THAT THE HOUNDS DESERVED...YES...ELECTRONIC CALLERS HAVE 2 FAULTS............
A LOT ARE CALLED UP AND SHOT .......DEAD
A LOT ARE CALLED UP AND HOUNDS DUMPED ON THEM....WHATS THE DIFFGRENCE.........A DEAD PC OF GAME---TO EACH HIS OWN.....BUT DONT BE A HYPOCRIT AND COMPLAIN THERES NO GAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AS FAR AS TURNING OUT ON 'CAGED' CATS.....I ONLY KNOW OF 2 IN 25 + YRS OF HUNTING..........AND DONT AGREE WITH IT EITHER...BUT 2 OF 20 +..I'LL HAVE TO TAKE THAT CRITROCISM
Where can you find one of them cat calling tapes? Or better yet, where do you find them dumba$$ cats? My count is mighty poor and I am in dire need of help.
If tradition is that important I recon we should all get a horse and throw every collar we own away, including name plates and let the dogs live under the house and in the yard.
Times are changing. There are places that I cant hunt now that I could hunt last year. Sometimes you have to do some things that may not be sportsman-like just to have a fox race, but the only thing worse that coming home empty handed is coming home having never turned your puppies out of the truck that you have only carried 3 or 4 times. I dont own a tape of no kind but am not against using one. My hunting partner has a whole selection of fiddle tunes for the foxes. I can only remember putting after one fox in the last year that was called out. So if any of you want to go hunting with me and are not going to turn out on a fox when you see one cross the road or wont turn out on a fox if called out if the time comes, please either leave your dogs at home or drive a mile or more down the road so that I dont have to listen to the barking *******s in your truck that you are too proud to turn loose!!
BUBBA....I HOPE THAT LAST STATEMENT WASNT DIRECTED AT ME..I'LL TURN OUT WHEN MOST WONT...BUT STILL APRICIATE A GOOD JUMP DOG..AND WILL AS LONG AS I HUNT...AND HAVE RESPECT FOR THE HUNTERS THAT INTRODUCED ME TO AREAS TO HUNT..YOU MAY HUNT EVERYWHERE I'VE EVER HUNTED...AND TAKE OVER BUT WHATEVER COMES TO PASS......I HOPE YOU ENJOY AS MUCH AS I HAVE !
Oh,Cry Me A River Bubba. "Times are changing, I'm to lazy to try and make a jump dog, I want to do it the easy way, I got cramps, I think I'm on my cycle, I ain't got no where to hunt, I ain't got no game. ext...ext... You probably ain't had a jump dog in so long you probably wouldn't know one if it bit you in the a$$. If you quit scatching all them speed demons you see at hunts and look a dog you might can get you one. FOXHUNTER MY A$$
you said....
"I'LL NEVER AGREE WITH PLAYING A TAPE AT DAYLITE ON A PERFECT MORNING TO HUNT....AND HAVE BEEN A PART OF THEM....DO I CARE TO...NO....WILL I BRAG ON ONE THAT THE HOUNDS DESERVED...YES..."
That makes a big difference. I NEVER played the tape before lunch. Always gave the dogs the chance to do it by themselves. But, somedays after 4-5 hours of nothing, I'm gonna change my bait. I aint gonna fish the same lure all day when I cant buy a strike.
You speak of bragging... (not pointing fingers, generally speaking)I'd never brag about catching anything with 45-50 head. Especially if I played the jukebox and put that many down behind him. I know that happens, and probably is the reason why you feel that way because you've seen it first hand. I'll agree with that. My motto was always the fewer the dogs the better. More than 25 was always a crowd. Lets face it, if a fox cant have the crap ran out of him with 10-12-15 dogs, dont invite someone else to go with you, REGROUP. I have a bad nerve about overpowering a fox(and I know alot CAN take it) but would rather hear 45-60 minutes of a race v/s 15 and a squeel. I'd still be hunting now if I had some better places to go by myself that had game. Time changes everything.
To sum it all up, I'd play that tape if it came down to having a race or not. Whats the difference in carring your dogs to a fox pen? I'd rather be an outside hunter and say "yeah I played the tape a few times" than say "yeah I run on the outside and sometimes run the pen." Which is lesser of the 2 evils? Outside/tape!
Since Bubba is hunting right now, I'll speak on his behalf, he said he didnt own a tape, but wasnt against using one. What easy way are you eluding to?
Rooster he said his partner had a whole selection. I 'm tired of the ******* match so I'll bow out gracefully and let you guys have it. I agree with you most of the time and enjoy your posts. I feel a lot like you do about the number of dogs and dumping and spikeing. But like I said I'm done.
No Alvin, not directed at anyone, but was written for everyone to read. Sorry if I ruffled any feathers.
James, please have your old lady read these posts to you and be sure you understand everything that has been written before you start typing. I'm not going into what you didn't comprehend, but if you go back and re-read what I wrote, I think you will see where your mouth overloaded your @ss!! Give it a try James, I trust that you really are smart enough to figure it out.
I never did read where you told Rod Vinson where you are from either.
