Re: Does anyone know the laws

Do not know if this will help you in anyway but if the man is calling your dogs and he is not a part of yalls hunt then he is interfering with an organized hunt which is illegal hope this helps

Re: Does anyone know the laws

I usually don't post on topics like this, but it's the same song and dance with every one so here goes

Guy’s I think we are all missing the point on this one, what laws were broken, if the man calls within 24 hours he has not broken the law, he has the right to catch the dogs because they on his property and they might be interfering with his hunt. Also, the man and the dogs were on his property so he was not interfering with your hunt as Joe said. Your hunt ended at your property line.

With today’s technology we should be able to keep 85-90% of our dogs off others land, the problem as I see it is “I have to carry the 20 I feed” so “I can only keep up with the one’s on the deer, I have tracking collars on all of them so I’ll get up with the others later”. It is your responsibility to maintain control all of your hounds not only the one’s in the buck race. By the time the law is involved the problem has occurred, now this gentleman knows he can corral all your dogs up and its not against the law as long as he contacts the owner with in 24 hours.

I would recommend having one of the older club members talk with him in a professional manner and try to work out the issue, this is where the issue about watering can be discussed, but it all starts with limiting the number of dogs getting out of pocket and getting on his property and that's our responsibility as hound owners. I know dogs cant read but your GPS don't lie.

Before you all start bashing me I have hunted inside and outside the wire and have raised hounds for the past 20 years, I am a born and raised Yankee that has converted to the Southern life style and will never go back. If you over 40 years old, I'm pretty sure your dad or granddad has told you that's old so and so's property you need to ask him if you can go on it. Please remember that a man’s property is his property and you need permission to be on it, whether he owns it or leases it.

It is pretty sad that I have to post my property with no trespassing signs to keep people from riding 4 wheelers through it and to keep cars from driving on my lawn or have to paint every other tree purple to keep someone of off it.

Take responsibility for your actions and respect the rights of people around you and a lot of this will go away.

Hope you all enjoy the rest of hunting season and Good Lord willing we can continue to do what we love.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy new year
    Be safe

    Great post, Fred.

I sure wish more people would think like you. All I want is to be left alone on my property to hunt how I want. And, for everyone else to be able to do the same. If everyone hunted on their own land, in their own preferred manner, there would be no issues.

    Re: Great post, Fred.

    Fred you are absolutley correct

Re: Does anyone know the laws

Just a update, after taking with one of the Game Wardens yesterday he told me anyone holding your dogs has to call in a reasonable amount of time,my question was ,what is a reasonable amount of time and he really didn't know, I guess I'll go see the county magistrate next week, maybe they can shed some light on this. For those that think we let our dogs just go on this property you are wrong,a swamp divides the 2 properties and the only access is the other side, sad part is we have permission to hunt or obtain our dogs from Every piece of property around them. I don't want them there anymore than he does, but I'm not going to quit hunting.

Re: Does anyone know the laws

Virginia is BLESSED with the Right to Retrieve law which allows UNARMED hunters to WALK onto Posted property to retrieve your dog. I wouldn't expect the law to do much, but I can almost guarantee you that if you immediately go onto his property when he catches your dogs then kindly and respectively retrieve them you are within the law. Just my two cents.
