The 2015 Walnut Creek Fox Preserve "Holly Jolly" Derby and All Age HGA Field Trial was a huge success. The weather "almost" cooperated with us this year! We had received close to 2" of rain on Thursday and Friday which didn't help the "wetness factor" in the pen, but it had cleared off late Friday afternoon and things were looking pretty good for Saturday. But during the night it turned from summer to winter. That didn't bother everyone so much since the wind had laid down and the scent conditions started off good. Even though the packs were big, there was great running all over the pen. Then with a little over an hour left to go in the hunt the wind decided to blow a cold north wind and you can guess what that did to the scent conditions! NOT GOOD! Actually it turned out OK since we were able to give out all 10 Hunting trophies in the All Age and 7 in the Derby. (Most of the time it's hard to give out 3 or 4 Hunting trophies since the running won't allow dogs to really hunt) And it wasn't like we didn't have pretty good scores since it still took 230 pts. to win in the Derby and 300 pts. in the All Age.
