So what goes on?

Hello all! This is the first time I'm going to FaerieCon and I was just wondering if any of you previous attendees could give me a basic run down of what goes on. Example: do people dress up all day? what things do they have for purchase (costumes, art, etc?), is there food available to buy or should I eat beforehand? I'm only going for Saturday, but I would love to dress up knowing that others will be joining in the fun too! Thank you so much!

Re: So what goes on?

well this is the first annual FaerieCon, so alot of it will be new to everyone.
however we have been producing events on the west coast for the last seven years, and just about everyone gets into the spirit and dresses up! i imagine it will be a bit different in a convention setting, but i feel i can guarantee you that you will not be the only one dressed up all day! i'm sure there will be lots of people expressing their faerie soul sElves!
you can visit the homepage to read about the different panel discussions and workshops that are happening...beyond that there will be various performances occuring on and off throughout the whole weekend, musicians, theater, magic etc...and the seperately ticketed goodfaeries/badfaeries masquerades and midnight movies at the trocadero theater down the street, after hours....
we have many many exhibitors selling everything from fine art to books to costuming and everything in between....there will be opportunities to meet alot of the artists and authors and have your favorite books/prints/CDs signed...
there is food but it is available through the convention center so unfortunately we don't get to apply our usual gourmet organic aesthetic there, like we do at faerieworlds. but there should be good choices, and there is an extensive market of restaurants and shops just right outside the convention center.
hope that helps!

Re: So what goes on?

*waves* Hello! (wasn't quite sure where to post this, so I apologize for my "noobishness")
I was at work and saw a piece one of our reporters (Gerald Kolpan)did on this Faeriacon.
At first I was excited, thinking I had time to get it together to go... But alas I saw the piece on Friday, Oct. 12 & I'm stuck at work right now all day and into the late night!
It looked like a lot of fun with great vendors!
I have a friend who LOVES ALL THINGS Faerie even more then I do!
So I'm curious to know if the Faerie Convention will be returning to Philadelphia next year?
(I could see my fae friend and I scampering around in full faere garb all 3 days fun fun!)
If its still up in the air.. Please Come back!!!!

Someone mentioned that fests like this happen on the west coast also?
I visit the San Francisco area once either in the spring (April) or summer (July)so let me know if there is somethin fun going on in that area around then!

But really.. please come back next year!! I'll be ther w/ wings on!!!

Re: So what goes on?

The convention is definitely going to be back next year, in Philadelphia, in the convention center...from what I heard, it will be October 10th-12th (ie: the same weekend this was) - so start getting ready!

Faerieworlds is the convention that happens on the West Coast, in Oregon, the first weekend of August. You can get more info about that through this site!

Re: So what goes on?

Tianshi, if you are in the Philly area, check out Spoutwood Farm fairy festival the first weekend in May. It is just south of York, Pa and definitely worth the drive over.

Re: So what goes on?

Yay! I'll have to make a note of it for next year & check it out!
I'm sure I can wrangle my boyfriend into wings!
I do live in the Philadelphia area & the fest in York, PA would probably be a fun little weekend away.
Where can I find more information on that?

For all the info on the Spoutwood Farm May Day Fairie Festival. Spoutwood is the longest running Faerie Fest, this being it's 16th year. Wonderfully attended as well with nearly 15 thousand over 3 days last year. Spoutwood is very different from the FaerieWorlds Shows, but our spirits are like two ends of the Rainbow, anchoring each coast of the US and dripping colored fairy magic across the country. Wherever a drop lands a faerie festival sprouts up. Faerie Magazine began at Spoutwood Farm and I am a contributing editor for that, as well as being a former staff member of the festival, and an artist in my own, www.mythicalmasks.com

And the FaerieCon, this past weekend in Philly was delightful and a blast. Kelly, Emilo, Robert, and all the wonderful folks did a great job. Thank you all.

Re: So what goes on?

yes i agree spoutwood faeiry festival is fantastic...all east coast faeries should attend! wish it was easier for us over here in the west. good thing we have faerieworlds....
and to clarify, faerieworlds is not a convention, but a mainstage outdoor music and art festival....

Re: So what goes on?

Katie (and all),

I hope FaerieCon returns to Philly, too. It has such great potential--so many talented folks involved and it seems the producers truly want to make people have the best time they can. Even in this (its first year) it made an admirable attempt to make an industrial setting feeling welcoming and magical. I'm sure if you couldn't make it this year, next year will be even better. I'll hope to see you there!

As to Fairie Fest in Glen Rock (near York)-- DEFINITELY check it out. It's hosted on part of an organic farm (rolling hills, bubble field, storytellers, educational talks, lots of food, live music, trees and tents, fairie maze, hair braiders--frankly, you name it, it's there). It's a naturally enchanting setting and emphasizes the good faeries and positive things (although the Dark Fae do have their place, too). It's a juried show with a VERY high percent of handcrafted work. It would probably make a lovely weekend outside of the city for you--It's one show my hubby, son and I attend BECAUSE it's a joy (and profitable). I hope you can attend--stop in and see us if you make it!

Have a fairie good day ;-)
