Birds
Just stocked up on wild bird seed the other day. Anyone else out there feed the birds? What varieties do you get at your feeders?

Hi...I have been using black oil sunflower seeds in the feeder and have a suet ball attached as well. We have been getting bluejays, nuthatches, chickadees, downy woodpeckers, once or twice a thrush, but the most consistent visitor is the red squirrel! None of the birds are appearing in large numbers, probably not a great need for our food supply due to the lack of snow. They are still fun to watch, though! Happy New Year. |

Amazing what a difference these few inches of snow has made. We were only getting Chickadees and Nuthatches before and now we've added Purple Finches, Tree Sparrows and Junkos. Now I just have to figure some way to keep the Blue Jays from wolfing everything down and we'll be all set.

Had the first robin of the year in the yard yesterday. We've heard them around for a few days but this was the first time I've spotted him. Still have the Nuthatches, Chickadees, Purple Finches and an occasional Junko coming to the feeders. Havent seen the Tree Sparrows for quite a while now. They must have moved on. We've always had the Pileated Woodpeckers around but there was actually a pair working the stumps the other day. Hope they build close, I'd like to see some smaller ones working around the house. The geese are back even though there is still no open water in from of the house. It should be open in the next few dsy the way the weather has been lately. What else... partridge on the lawn the other night. We never know when he will show up. Haven't seen the mate lately but she must be around somewhere. Next sign of spring to show up should be the ducks that work the roadside ditch for most of the summer. We'll keep you posted. |

Just surprised two Flickers in the back yard. I'm also hearing what I thing are Cedar Waxwings but isn't it too early yet for those? |

We had an interesting experience a little earlier this year. A neighbour identified a regular visitor at my birdfeeder as a brown thrasher which is apparently a bit of a winter phenomenon. He notified the bird society who came to view it a few days later. The bird came for months but has not been back now since the last week of February. Otherwise we have had nothing but the regulars....on another bird note, I have seen sandhill cranes in several locations now. It really must be Spring! |
