Manitoulin Trade Fair

Here follows the official press release concerning the postponement of the Manitoulin Trade Fair for a year due to the continuing problems between NEMI and its workers. I don’t know who is in the right or wrong with this situation and I don’t care. Should anyone be forgiven for messing up a wonderful Manitoulin Island promotional tool such as the Trade Fair for any reason at all? Shouldn't our great Island and the people and businesses that support it come first? Must everyone play games like a bunch of juveniles? Comments?

""(LITTLE CURRENT)- Manitoulin Trade Fair IX due to run May 5,6,7 this year has been postponed for one year to May 4,5,6, 2007.

Manitoulin Trade Fair Coordinator Frank Reynolds had received information from the NEMI workers Union leadership that a large picket action would be taking place at the Recreation Centre in Little Current ( Home of the Trade Fair) in support of the Union's on-going labour dispute with NEMI.

" After a meeting and discussions with management staff of NEMI we decided that we had to give our stakeholders ( show exhibitors, sponsors, and show staff) some options we were considering". Reynolds went on to say that the options were 1. Status quo 2. Postpone one year 3. Hold the show in Espanola which had the only facility in the area other than the rec Centre which could house our very large show. There are no other facilities on the Island which could contain 226 booths.

The Manitoulin Trade Fair, a project of LAMBAC, has been run since inception by Frank Reynolds and LAMBAC senior staff. It is a not for profit venture intended to showcase Manitoulin/LaCloche businesses and to promote our area as a tourism destination. It is financially self-supporting but depends on revenue from sponsors, booth fees and entrance fees to be a viable operation. Trade Fair organizers felt that a strong picket action at the Trade Fair would have an extremely negative impact on the show.
" The Manitoulin Trade Fair is an upbeat show that appeals to all ages so people bring their families and we do not want to see anyone get hurt. The show area is extremely congested and we feel that there are serious safety issues that cannot be resolved satisfactorily with a large picket action taking place at the same time."

The Manitoulin Trade Fair is very important to the economy of Manitoulin Island. NEMI in particular has stong participation in the show with over 40 businesses/services booked into every show. All show paid staff are from NEMI and the payroll is almost $4,000 for the weekend. In addition, the show pays full rental at the Rec Centre and has donated money and equipment to the Rec Centre for community use.
" WE have received overwhelming support from our stakeholders" added Reynolds.

Manitoulin Trade Fair IX will now be held at the Recreation Centre in Little Current May 4,5,6 2007.""

Re: Manitoulin Trade Fair

What are they arguing about anyway. Money or benefits?
