Re: mastitas and penicilin

Better get on it quick, I would sock it to her the first round with 1.5 to 2cc's if shes a walker, then follow up with a 1cc every 12-24 hours for a few days. Mastitas will take them out quick.

Second thaught, If you dont want to hand feed the pups I would take her to the vet.

Re: mastitas and penicilin

some folks call it milk fever. milk spoils in her bags and is no good for the pups to nurse from.

Re: mastitas and penicilin

it is an infection in her milk glands, causing her to actually "poison" her pups... best to give her 5-6 cc twice a day for 3-5 days...it takes a strong dose of pennicillin to get rid of it...hand feed pups until hardness is gone or you'll loose them. most likely she'll have it next time, too...
we always give our dogs 3 cc twice a day about 3-4 days prior to 'due' date...
good luck.

Re: mastitas and penicilin

I just raised a litter with the same thing happening. vet told me to give 3cc's twice a day the fisrt day. then 3 cc's a day for 6 more days. pups stayed with gyp the whole time with no problems vet told me the only thing it would do to the pups is cause diarrhea just what worked for me.

Re: mastitas and penicilin

sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim(smz-tmp)pills work a lot faster than penicillin.lots of hunters in central ms.use this for mastitis and as a substitute for albon on pups as antibiotic.double strength 800/160 on gyp once in a.m,one in p.m. **** normal in 2-3 days.can alternate penicillin with it .pups take only 1/2 pill.been using it for many years.if you get regular strength, then 2 pills in a.m.,2 in p.m.
