BROKE FOXHOUNDS???????

How do you go about breaking one to run only fox? I know you can use just about any bloodline but which one would you use and why?

Re: BROKE FOXHOUNDS???????

Daniel get a .22 pistol, shock collars and your patient shoes on.Running grey fox outside the wire is the biggest challenge dog wise I have ever faced. It has been the most rewarding and the most agravating thing with dogs I will ever have to face I'm sure.Any blood at all just won't do either. Most of the dogs bred for pen trialing won't cut it on the outside. Just not bred for the same things. I would suggest finding someone who will let you ride along on the outside to learn what it is in a dog you should be looking for. Mr. Purvis and the Barefoot boys have historically had some of the better breeding for grey fox hunting. If you live @ SE Va. you are welcome to ride along with me one day if you like.Would be glad to talk with you a little more if you want.

Re: BROKE FOXHOUNDS???????

If you have a fox pen with just foxes in it and a old dog and put your young dogs in the pen with the old dog and when they see what the older dog is doing they should learn from the old dog.

Re: BROKE FOXHOUNDS???????

The guys I foxhunt with start their pups in fox pens. As soon as they start running they take them on the outside with their broke hounds. If the pups start trying to run deer, the guys will ride around either early in the morning or at dusk and find a deer standing in a field. They'll turn the deer-running pup out on the deer and when the pup starts barking on the deer track, the hunter will shock the pup with a shock collar. The hunters will repeat this process until the pup learns that it is wrong to run a deer track.

Every once in a while you'll get a pup that you just can't break from running deer. Those pups often end up as deer hounds and make their deer hunting owners very happy.

Re: BROKE FOXHOUNDS???????

You can buy'em,sell'em,trad'em,kill'em,shoot, shock, beat, cuss, like, love and hate them! IT'S A CHALLENGE! If you know someone that has a pack of foxdogs like you want go with them and learn all you can. Like most things foxhunters like different style dogs. Dogs that I use to field trial have worked well at making what I like on the outside.Cut,swing, pull up ,shut up,grab it,and hold it until you get help or it gets taken from you.All wanting the front and hunting with 15 to 20 dogs is the way I like it. GOOD LUCK! (BARBER)

Re: BROKE FOXHOUNDS???????

If you want to learn about fox hunting on the outside and how to break dogs and the many blood lines you need to talk to two of what I consider the best hunters on the outside. They are Reggie Edwards from Grimesland, NC and Jeff Williams from Greenville, NC. Reggie has hunted for many years and judged for many years as well as raised many dogs and had champions. He is part of a legend that will soon be gone if the younger generation doesn't pick it up. Due to devepopment it is getting hard to hunt on the outside. These two do it in style every chance they get.Reggie introduced hunting to my daughter and she has gained a respect for nature. I ENJOY THE HUNTING STORIES THEY BRING BACK. Jeff has been his partner for 20 plus years. They have raised some fine hounds to run.

Re: BROKE FOXHOUNDS???????

Taking a dozen or 15 dogs and catching foxes is something a man can be really proud of when he does it. I don't mean following him for several hours, I mean running him down is about as a rewarding as anything you can do with hounds. But, man does it take alot time and you will never get them just perfect because you will always have new young hounds to add in to your pack.

Re: BROKE FOXHOUNDS???????

Jack, the man I hunt with says you've always got to haul some aggrovation, meaning if all the ones you are hunting are broke then your packs getting old and you are going backwards !My problem is every one I've ever had aggrovates me in one way or several others, but I've learned to tolerate just a LITTLE trying to get the job done. TOUGH TO DO!! (BARBER)

Re: BROKE FOXHOUNDS???????

Barber, you are right, thats what makes it so rewarding is to take those young dogs and turn them into foxhounds. You get to watch them learn lessons from you, other hounds, foxes, the good ones get better on these lessons. That in my opinion is the main difference between outside hounds and pen hounds. Not trying to run anything down. An outside hounds is constantly growing as a dog right on up until he is old and washed up at 6 or 7. Anybody who wants to go hunting or talk about broke dogs, man I love it.
