For all you steam fans - head to Whitby this weekend (3/4 May).
Railway history is to be made this weekend in a Yorkshire coastal resort. And the weather won’t make any difference whatsoever!
For the first time ever a very special visitor will be steaming into Whitby on Saturday 3 May and Sunday 4 May in the form of “Sir Nigel Gresley” – an A4 Pacific Class engine which in its heyday travelled the length and breadth of the East Coast Main Line. Its sister engine “Mallard” went into the history books as being the fastest steam locomotive in the world.
Permission has been granted for just two historic journeys into Whitby. These will take place on Saturday and Sunday with “Sir Nigel” steaming into Whitby at 1335hrs on both days.
On both days the train will start its journey at Pickering, departing at 12 noon. It will call at Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont before heading into Whitby at 1335hrs. On both days the train will then depart Whitby at 1400hrs for the return leg to Pickering, giving Whitby residents an opportunity to travel out and help make history (Whitby residents can return on the 1600hrs service from Pickering). Usual fares apply without the need for advance bookings. A mix of carriages will be hauled by the locomotive.
