Picking up from the Chairman's Blog.....
On those occasions when I've travelled on the M-F 0742 ex Hexham (joining at either Prudhoe or Blaydon), the train has had the benefit of two conductors, with both struggling to collect fares as they squeeze through the crowded train.
Soooo..... if it's possible to have two conductors, would a "quick fix" to the capacity problem on this service not be found by providing a train of TWO Pacers? One of them could even be detached when the train reaches Newcastle (there is at least a good five minutes between it's timetabled arrival and subsequent departure for Middlesbrough, and one of the crew could announce which "half" was going to be left at Newcastle as the train emerges from Bensham Tunnel).
More often than not, there seems to be a spare 142 sat in the loop at the west end of platform 7/8 at Newcastle; the "twin" set run to Hexham and back would only occupy the additional set for a couple of hours; and there'd be no extra staffing cost.
I'm sure that this simple solution must have been thought of before now....
