Waldon Safe

Waldon athletic are safe from relegation after Tuesday's 4-0 victory at Brixham United in the Premier Division of the WBW Solicitors South Devon League, writes Gordon Hines. And Newton Abbot '66 have avoided the drop from Division One after coming from behind to beat Paignton Saints 5-3 on the same night at Clennon Valley.

Waldon looked doomed three matches ago, but maximum points against Brixham Villa (4-0), Hele Rovers (3-2) and now Brixham United produced a Fulham-like finish to the season to leave Torbay Gents as the most likely side to accompany Ipplepen Athletic back into Division One.

"Everyone's wishing the season was just getting under way with the form we've shown these last few games," said Waldon secretary Keith Aplin after goals from Simon Lewcock (2), Lee Chamberlain and Danny Harrity had seen them coast to victory having established a 3-0 interval lead.

Also in the Premier Division, Upton Athletic extended their lead at the top to six points with a 4-0 win at Chagford, but resisted the temptation to break open the champagne with Bovey Tracey still able to clinch the championship on goal difference.

That's because Bovey are almost certain to be awarded the points against Ipplepen after Ipplepen failed to honour last week's fixture (they have 14 days in which to appeal against any points deduction).

And Bovey are playing their final game tonight at home to Hele Rovers. It's been switched to Liverton with the cricket season now up and running at Bovey and a win should be enough to give Bovey the title.

However, to add a little spice, Rovers need to win to be sure of avoiding relegation!

Upton's goals came from Dan Kingscote (2), Andrew Walker and Lewis Bergin after establishing a 3-0 first half league.

MEANWHILE, in Division One, Newton '66 came from 2-1 down at the change-over to win 5-3 at Paignton Saints thanks to goals from player-manager Darren Morgan (3) and James Hill (2).

They still have one game to play at home to Totnes & Dartington Reserves tonight, but can't be caught by Abbotskerswell and certainly not by Victoria Rangers at the bottom of the table.

IN Division Three, Buckland Athletic Reserves all but sealed the divisional title with a 1-0 victory at home to Bovey Tracey Reserves, the only goal coming in the 73rd minute when 17-year old Greg Allen hit a 25-yard screamer.

Foxhole United also won, beating Buckfastleigh Rangers Reserves 3-1 in an exciting game at Belfield with goals from Mark Foy, Rob Highfield and Lee Bond.

IN Division Six, champions Buckland Athletic 3rds dropped only their fifth point of the season after being held to a 1-1 draw by Riviera Spurs Reserves at Decoy, while goals from Josh Howes and Brett Rotheroe gave Marldon a 2-1 victory over Paignton Villa Reserves.

Villa's reply was from Andrew Cooper.

Re: Waldon Safe

are you telling me that you wouldnt have done the same by bringing in simon lewcock? well done... we had one ringer in! doesnt take away from the acheivement of us winning those three games!

What is gutting about us staying up? Half the players in our first team were playing for the reserves earlier in the season as our first team lost a lot of players to 'bigger' clubs.. so to stay up was a good effort from the lads
