Well what you don't know is that the timing of Sven's departure couldn't be better......... I wouldn't leave TBGS for anything less than 5k a year!!! Would need a right hand man though - fancy it Eddy?? I'll make sure you get £7 an hour and free rubs from the female physio!!

Re: TBGS U-16 National champions!!!!!

Ports, I went up to watch the torquay boys with Mikey Bonds dad and what a performance to win the match! All five goals were good goals and the team was very impressive.

I thought that your striker was outstanding up front on his own and so was the left back.

Two highlights for me were the supporters from the school who were brilliant and the tremendous save from your keeper at the death.

I hope the boys enjoyed the day!

Re: TBGS U-16 National champions!!!!!

Armo you should have come up and said hello and had a kick around at half time on the pitch!!!! Centre forward is very good and the captain at left back is a perfect model captain - he would still play with half his leg hanging off and still believe we could win if were 4 down with 1 min to play!!!! But couldn't really single out any player as they were all awesome - ability, heart, desire, discipline and belief.

Re: TBGS U-16 National champions!!!!!

Just threw loads of tea cups and kicked some doors at half time Mark - but i missed!! Knew as long as it was no worse than 4-1 at half time we still had a chance. Think its going to take me a few weeks to recover - but i can retire a happy man now!!

Re: TBGS U-16 National champions!!!!!

I had enough fun watching the game without making a tit of myself on the pitch! Anyway its your boys who deserve to be enjoying themselves out there not me.

Great effort though especially after the nightmare start. I must admit I have never seen such an animated managerial performance, you make Barry Fry look like a mime artist!

Re: TBGS U-16 National champions!!!!!

I was also lucky enough to be at the game. The most unbelievable comeback I have ever seen! What a game! Ports, you must be so proud of each and every one of those boys. They played with pride, passion and belief that they could win it even when 4-0 down. Every boy on the pitch was brilliant and difficult to single anyone out but have to agree with Armo about left-back and also thought lad in the centre of the park who was awarded M-O-M was immense, never wasted a ball and never gave up.

All of them a credit to you and the school. Enjoy all the praise - thoroughly deserved!!

Re: TBGS U-16 National champions!!!!!

To their credit Phil the Hearld has been brilliant for us on the cup run - taking stories late after hours for the semi final and giving us good write ups and previews to matches.

Couldn't single out any player in the team for special praise - of course some played better than others ability wise, but every one of them played to their full potential and gave more than 100% effort thats why we won!!!!

Did tell myself i would be composed Armo if we scored and at the final whistle no matter what the result but unfortunately emotion took over and that all went out the window!!!

Re: TBGS U-16 National champions!!!!!

better than i expect but i guess that is down to you ports.

Torquay Boys' Grammar School have won the ESFA Royal Air Force Under-16 Schools' Cup, defeating Birkenhead's Rock Ferry High School 5-4 after a pulsating final at Manchester City's Eastlands ground on Monday. In one of the most remarkable comebacks in the history of the competition, TBGS produced a storming second half performance to claim the silverware having been 4-0 down after just 20 minutes.

However, goals from Romley Preston-Ellis, Dan Keating, Sam Tanner, Zac Norton-Cox and captain Sean Adderley turned the tie on its head and handed the Torquay side the national schools cup.

Coach Chris Porter was almost lost for words after witnessing a classic final, and was quick to hail his side's never-say-die spirit.

Porter said: "It was some game, and the effort was unbelievable. It's a great result for us - to come back from that was incredible.

"It was an unbelievable second half performance - an awesome second half. I've never seen a performance like it to be honest, it was amazing stuff. We had pace, energy and were just awesome all over, in every position.

"Sean Adderley put in a true captain's performance - I've never seen a better captain's performance, it was the best ever for me.

"Rock Ferry were a good side, with a good pedigree. I think we showed them a bit too much respect early in the game, and they went at us. They were 2-0 up in three minutes, and we were really shell-shocked after that. Their fans were cheering them on and they were really confident.

"We got the ball and passed it around quite well, but when they got into our half, we looked overawed. Basically, they had four chances and got four goals.

"We just kept playing and, to be fair, we didn't really do anything different. We raised our game to the level we know we can play at, won our tackles and got a lot of shots in.

"Fifteen minutes before half-time, Romley Preston-Ellis got a cracking goal and we went in at half-time 4-1 down. Then, the second half was just unbelievable."

TBGS never gave up after Rock Ferry's dominant opening spell. Despite being 4-0 down after 20 minutes, Porter's side played some fine football and, on the half-hour mark, were given hope by Preston-Ellis's superb 30-yard goal, set-up by Joe Cowell.

Then, in the second period, TBGS simply dominated. It was 4-2 on 50 minutes when Sam Tanner beat his full-back for pace before crossing for Keating, who fired home from close range.

It was 4-3 minutes later when goalkeeper Matt Thompson collected a cross and threw the ball out to Keating, who beat several players on a sublime run before hitting a cross-shot that was turned in by Tanner.

With 10 minutes to go, the atmosphere at Eastlands reached fever pitch as the unthinkable happened. A goalmouth scramble in the Rock Ferry penalty area ended when Norton-Cox scored from six yards for 4-4.

Then, in injury time, the many fans who had travelled up from the Bay to cheer on the Torquay players were thrown into near-ecstasy when captain Adderley scored with a thumping header at the far post after a deep corner from Keating.

It was the most dramatic ending to a truly unforgettable match. Suddenly, Torquay Boys' Grammar School were the national champions - an honour they richly deserved.
