Upton Athletic

They may be this season's forgotten team, yet how much longer can Upton Athletic be ignored in the battle for the WBW Solicitors South Devon League's Premier Division title?

The question sits up begging to be answered following this week's Herald Express disclosure that two SDL sides, Bovey Tracey and Chagford, are among the 10 throughout Devon and Cornwall to have applied to join the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League next season. Both will have to finish in the top two of their league championship to be even considered for Division One (East).

And it could be that only the champions will be accepted should they meet the criteria when the ground inspection team pay a call during April.

That would make Bovey Tracey favourites given the current league standings where they lead Brixham Villa (second) by a point with a game in hand, but head Chagford in fourth place by a healthy seven points having played the same number of fixtures (11).

Which is where Upton Athletic enter the equation, despite alarmingly premature exits from the Herald Cup and Devon Premier Cup and their demise against Kingskerswell and Chelston in the semi-finals of the George Belli Cup.

To all intents and purposes, they had also been written off in the league... until last week's 4-1 win at Kingsteignton Athletic to hoist themselves above Chagford into third spot with two games in hand of Bovey Tracey and three of Brixham Villa.

So can the South Devon League's most decorated club resurrect a season that was heading for total oblivion, and turn it round by winning the Premier Division?

Manager Steve Kingscote is in his first season at senior level after four years in charge of the club's Reserves during which they won promotion from Division Two and completed two 'double doubles' by lifting the Dartmouth Cup and Fred Hewings Cup last season and the Devon Senior Cup and Fred Hewings Cup the year before that.

He believes Upton can win this season's championship, and doesn't mind who's listening, not least in the Bovey Tracey area!

They're the only team to put one over on Upton in an otherwise 100 per cent league record, So, in Kevin Keegan's immortal rant aimed at Manchester United during his first spell as Newcastle boss, Kingscote would love it, just love it, if they beat Bovey (or anyone else) to the championship.

"I think we will," said the 41-year old Kingscote.

"I keep reading on the website about how we are on the slide, yet I see it as quite the opposite.

"I've introduced eight from last season's reserve squad, and now the first team is on the up after being down for the last couple of years.

"The players, committee - they've all been supportive, and we feel we can beat Bovey in the return in the next couple of weeks to turn the title race on its head."

In addition to assistant manager Martyn Phillips, Kingscote has Colin Bastow back from Buckland Athletic to help coach the squad in tandem with long serving club member and former Torquay United midfielder Ian Bastow.

"Colin and Ian have stepped up training to two nights a week, so that we're no longer short of fitness when games are rained off," said Kingscote.

"And we also have Mark Loram back at the club. Whether or not he's in the starting line-up, his experience is great to have in the dressing room having played at the top level with Torquay United and Queens Park Rangers."

Upton face Waldon Athletic at Torquay's Windmill Hill tomorrow with the thought of a double whammy - the inclusion of goalscoring midfielder Karl Dooley on his debut after this week's move from Stoke Gabriel, and the prospect of Chagford beating Bovey Tracey at home in another vital league game.

Providing Upton win, of course, it would narrow the gap with Bovey to three points with two games still in hand, and improve even further the Cricketfield Road side's chances of reviving a season many considered was long dead.

Added Kingscote: "We know where we have to improve the squad, but the start of this season was time for a change under the previous regime when Brian Foster was manager.

"The players we've brought in from the reserves - Dan Redhead, Andrew Walker, Louis Bergin, Michael Reece, Dan Kingscote, Steve Northcott and goalkeeper Ryan McVitie - have all breathed new life into the team.

"Can they help us win their title? I believe they can."

Re: Upton Athletic

I have admired Upton for many years, our first team have played them in the Herald cup, which we gave them hell of a game, but we lost,my team Stavy Res played their res in the Fred Hewings cup 1/4 final 2 years ago when we were div 7, great game but we lost, Upton have been magnificent ambassadors for the South Devon League over the last 20 years, trophy after trophy, which is what i want at Stavy,we have had 4 trophies,in the last 3 years, winning breads success, us Stavy boyz, we live in Ivybridge, so we dont get to hear the day to day gossip/banter within the Torbay area, i watch their results with interest, and i predict they will win the Premier Division, winners dont quit.

Re: Upton Athletic

Ferg, many years ago Bill Fisher was mis-quoted in the Herald by Gordon Hines and we knew that every team that played us raised their game to try and put us in our place. We responded well, but sometimes when the local hacks come knocking it's best to say very little.

Re: Upton Athletic

I like many others do not hold the best interests of our local rivals Bovey , I went to chagford today to see them get turned over and what I saw was something totally different.
I read about Bovey Tracey bottlers and I hoped for that today.
I watched in awe as they ripped Chagford to bits and if it was not for consistant bad ref'in they should have scored 10.
I was speaking toa few of my mates there and they agreed with me they are the best team they have played this season.
If Upton do win the league you will have had too have one hellof a season, Bovey Tracey never thought I would say this but my sat afternoon in Chagford I would have payed to watch that football

Re: Upton Athletic

I have to agree with Stavvy legend out of all the teams in the SDL you have to look at Upton and respect what they have achieved over the years, they have remained consistantly one of the best side around, as for the Cup runs just look at Wenger and Arsenal, sometimes you just get beat. If i was to manage i would definately use them to inspire players and the Club i was at. Like Man Utd love them or hate them you have to admire them and what they have achieved; if you hate them that much and you can't accept that then i'd say you were (aimed generaly)jelous.

Re: Upton Athletic

re:? it all depends on team we put out on day and how well we play. if we play our best we have a chance. if we play how we have in a lot of games this season we will get beat. we have said from the start this year will be very hard with so many players stepping up from last years res.

Re: Upton Athletic

well done to bovey for winning the league and i say winning very loosly, in fact i don't think they won it,more like upton lost it.

steve and fergie deserve alot of credit for pushing bovey all the way. if they do well next season all the mystic posters wil say it's only because bovey aren't in the league. look at the league table,if it wasn't for that debacle against gents bovey would be runners up. fact.

if this & if that, if upton didnt draw against kingsteignton then we would have won the league, they should blame themselves for ****ing up & not gents

Re: Upton Athletic

Upton goals + 71 ?
Bovey goals + 88 say - 20 re gents = 68
Bovey woud have beat Gents with 11 by more than 3 goals + they would have scored a few against ipplepen so would have still won league
Cooney!

May 16th, 2008 - 11:58 AM
Re: Upton Athletic

Yea agree with the poster above, if we'd played the Pens game then you wouldn't have the Gents game as an excuse, It was a great race and full credit to Upton on that. But sorry Phil cant agree with you mate- Bovey won the league FACT! A major say in that was taking 4 points off Upton when it mattered.

Re: Upton Athletic

good point steve but i can't help thinking that upton lost it when they drew with kingsteignton. if they put just one away of the many chances they had we wouldn't be debating this. i always think it's a damp squib when a team wins on goal difference, should have a play off like in italy.league could make some more money from it.
Cooney!

May 16th, 2008 - 12:25 PM
Re: Upton Athletic

Maybe Phil, but my point is you cant look at football like that, What if Bovey had scored 1 of their 3 great chances against Upton or indeed Kk & Chelston the folllowing week? (all what ifs isn't it?) Again then we wouldnt be debating this, all i can say is it was a fantastic race and well done to Upton who once again many people had written off.

Re: Upton Athletic

The rules are there at the beginning of the season, Bovey outscored any team in any division and in my mind DESERVED to be winners.
When we played them this season they were by far the best Footballing team.
Well Done
