PEACE IN MOGADISCIO

Please advise if you believe peace will ever return to Somalia and the capital,Mogadiscio. Once a beautiful and well maintained coastal Italianate city on the Indian Ocean,it was often dubbed the jewel of Italian East Africa, and the Florence of Africa. Sadly, since the civil war of 1991,and total collapse of law and order and subsequest collapse of the former gov't run by Said Barre, the city today is anyhing but beautiful. Lying in total ruins,it is filthy beyond belief. No municipal trash pick-up has existed in 14 years.Just Imagine! No buildings escaped desttruction or major damage from three years of incessant shelling, firing and looting. The city has no postal service,no minicipal electricity grid,no plumbing and no sanitary sewage systems. All destroyed during the relentless clan warfare of the early 1990's.A western citizen from the U.S.or Europe can not imagine life in a city like Mogadiscio or vision such a devastated and hopeless place. As the country remains without a gov't,the int'l airport and seaport remain closed.thus,Somalia remains effectively the most isolated country on Earth.Westeners can not easily reach or enter the capital.Kidnaping, theft, rape and homicide remain rampant.Westeners are non-existent,except for the few int'l aid workers and journalists that are far from frr to roam around the city. They require bands of heavily armed guards as militia for protection from the rampant,well-armed civilians and patrolling war lords that controm pieces of pfeifdoms of the former Italian colonial harbour city. When not out doing reporting or humanitarian work, they are holed-up in fortified compounds for protection. The banking system completely collapsed after the civil war, too. However, progress has been made recently, and a new "central"bank was formed in 2001,i.e.,Nuova Banca Nazionale Somala.[bank code; CBSOSOS1] However,to date,no int'l financial activity has been resumed,as no gov't structure or lasw exist, and the Somali Shilling is worthless. Therefore, respond urgently to my query.thanks!
