back from alderney!

sure there are lots of things to say about alderney ! apart from " that was a pretty hardcore trip " or something. In the meantime, check out http://www.alderney.net/index.php/pid/14

Will start getting together stuff for site - all pics and submissions appreciated, otherwise dont blame me if words such as "after an easy sail from portsmouth" creep in.

For anyone who is curious about the kind of crossing the beckenham crew did last weekend, read on.

“Five people have been rescued off the north Cornwall coast after drifting for eight days in a life raft.
Coastguards believe the group abandoned its yacht after getting into difficulties after leaving southern Ireland for Le Havre in France.

Survivors were only able to call for help when the life raft drifted into mobile phone range.

Members of the group, from 60ft former fishing boat Inis Mil, are now being treated for hypothermia in hospital.

A helicopter from RNAS Culdrose rescued them three miles off Trevose Head.

The five seamen and their vessel were reported missing five days ago after failing to arrive in France.

UK, French and Channel Island search and rescue authorities had been involved in the search.

Nothing was heard from the yacht's crew until 0918 BST on Wednesday, when one of the survivors used a mobile phone to call for help.

A Sea King helicopter from RNAS Culdrose airlifted the crew
Coastguard watch manager Martin Bidmead said: "Considering the weather conditions over the past week we consider these survivors to be very lucky.

"No distress alert was received from the vessel prior to the mobile telephone call."

He added that they had probably been out of range for the mobile phone. If the crew had had a mobile VHF phone, as coastguards recommend, they could have raised the alarm earlier.

The rescue operation involved the Padstow and Newquay lifeboats, and was co-ordinated by coastguards.

The survivors are now at Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske, near Truro.

An RNLI spokeswoman said: "They seem to be suffering from hypothermia and they were very hungry but fortunately they are not too badly off."

The former fishing boat, which had been converted into a sailing ketch, is believed to have sunk.”
