Aimar to play in portugual

MADRID (AFP) - Argentinian international midfielder Pablo Aimar on Thursday signed for Portuguese giants Benfica from relegated Spanish First Division side Real Zaragoza.

The 28-year-old - nicknamed 'the clown' and capped over 50 times by his country as well as being a veteran of two World Cup final tournaments - has agreed a four-year deal worth 7.5 million euros (11.9 million dollars).

Aimar previously worked under Benfica's new Spanish scoach Quique Flores during his time at Valencia from 2000 to 2006.

Re: Aimar to play in portugual

Thanks for the news Daryl. I have to admit, I was silly enough to believe the newspaper reports claiming that Newcastle had made a last minute offer for Aimar and that we'd signed him from under Benfica's noses! After all these years I should know better... It should have been obvious that he'd never consider coming to us and we were being used by the agent (as we so often have been over recent years) but I couldn't help myself getting carried away though, as he's one of my favourites to watch when he's playing well.

Ah well... I hope it will work out well for him at Benfica, who are a massive club in Portugal. Actually I hope to be able to watch him play there as I am often in Lisbon. The Estadio da Luz must be a tremendous place to play football, and the supporters are very knowledgeable and passionate there, in a quiet, Portuguese kind of way!

It's incredible that he is still only 28. He could still play another world cup for Argentina if he found his form and motivation again. I think that playing in Portugal won't help him with that though, as the league is generally a poor standard.

Good signing for Benfica though, no doubt about that, especially since the old maestro Rui Costa just retired!

Re: Aimar to play in portugual

Thats interesting information there Richie. I always hoped he'd go to England. He is also one of my favoirte players as well. I am not sure about the standard of play in portugual as being poor. The teams do generally well in Europe, look at Lisbon last year.

I hope he can find back his motivaton at 30 he can surely make a third world cup. Aimar just hasnt lived up to the expectations, perhaps injuries.. He was hailed as the saviour wid Zaragoza no one expected them to be regulated therefore I expect him to shine in portugal and return to the NT. We need more playmakers that Riquleme.

Re: Aimar to play in portugual

Yeah Daryl, it would be great to get Aimar and Riquelme competing against eachother for that number 10 shirt - surely a good thing for Argentina!

As for the standard of play in Portugal, I agree with you that it's not unusual for one of Porto, Sporting and Benfica to get through the group stage of the champions league but in general the domestic league matches are no-where near the level of Spain, England, and Italy for example in terms of intenisty and quality. But that is to be expected - it's a tiny country of 10 milliion people (about the same size as London and Paris I think!). They have a remarkable record of producing top quality players for such a small population, but the fact is that the top quality players only stay there until they get a big offer from abroad.

I think Aimar has gone there for an easy life personally - he can ease through most matches at maybe 70% of his capacity and still be the best player on the pitch. He'll be earning a big wage from Benfica and his familly will a comfortable life in a great city. On the big nights in the Champions League or in the derbies against Porto and Sporting he might be inspired by the occasion and the atmosphere to play his best, but that won't be enough to get him back playing for Argentina. Just my opinion - hopefully he will prove me wrong this season!!! We will see!!!!
