Newcastle sign Argentine Guttierez!
WAHOOO! Newcastle have signed Jonas Guttierez....
Anybody on here Argentinian (or follows Argentine football closely) who can tell anything about him?
Everything I've heard seems positive - he seems to be an attacking, crowd pleasing player - exactly what we need at Newcastle, since we know we'll never win anything we just want to watch quality player playing exciting football in a team we can be proud of!
The fact that he is Argentinian is a big positive! I just hope he's better than the other two Argentines who have played for us, Bassedas and Cordone, who were both absolutely rubbish!
Roll on the new season!

Re: Newcastle sign Argentine Guttierez!
Sorry to bump this for anyone who doesn't care (probably all of you!). Jonas has looked brilliant in the pre-season friendlies, he is certainly an exciting prospect!
And now we have signed Coloccini from Deportivo, who is very highly rated from all accounts. He has a haircut like Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons.... Why do all Argentianian footballers have GREAT hair?! Anybody seen Coloccini play? (I think he has played regularly for Argentina).
Anyway, Newcastle now have two Argentinian internationals in the first XI, which will surely make us Bati's favourite English team???!!!!
Role on the new season... I just wish we weren't playing the Dirty Reds (sorry Katy!) in the first game of the season!

Re: Newcastle sign Argentine Guttierez!
Thanks Katy, yep he was pretty impressive - best debut I've seen from a Newcastle for long time (can't even think of another one as good, off the top of my head - maybe Les Ferdinand v Coventry in 95...).
Anyway, never expected to get a point at Old Trafford so that's a bonus! Good job Ronaldo was injured mind...

Richie, I saw this happen last night... I was gutted, as if you haven't got enough problems without this!
Will you keep us informed of his progress???
Newcastle Sweat On 'Spiderman'
11/09/2008 15:30
Newcastle United are sweating on the fitness of their Argentinean international midfielder Jonas Gutierrez after he suffered an injury in last night's draw with Peru in Lima.
The 25-year-old clashed with Peru's Paolo De La Haza after just 16 minutes of the South American World Cup qualifier, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The ex-Velez Sarsfield player was replaced immediately by Sebastian Battaglia amid concerns for his fitness.
Reports in Argentina suggested that the left-footer had suffered a dislocated shoulder, however, these fears were allayed by Argentina's press officer Andres Ventura.
He told the media: "Jonas suffered a strong trauma to his right shoulder and he will need more medical examinations."
Esteban Cambiasso gave the guests an 84th minute lead in Lima, but Johan Fano plundered an injury time leveller after a run and cross by Juan Vargas.
The injury came on the occasion of Jonas' eight cap for his country, following a summer switch from La Liga to the English top-flight.
Newcastle paid an undisclosed sum for the player to Real Mallorca, and he has so far impressed in the Premier League.
His eye-catching display against Mancheter United at Old Trafford prompted analyst Alan Hansen to describe the winger as the best summer signing on display on the opening weekend of the season.
The Magpies entertain Hull City this weekend and are currently a club in crisis. Obafemi Martins, Mark Viduka and Damien Duff remained sidelined with injuries, while the club's myriad power collective have yet to choose a manager in the wake of Kevin Keegan's abrupt departure.

Re: Newcastle sign Argentine Guttierez!
Hehe, yeah thanks for posting that Katy! When it rains it pours!
The latest is that he's dislocated the shoulder... Nobody seems to know how long he'll be out for. Apparently he's staying in Argentina for treatment there. I don't blame him for not wanting to come back to Newcastle immediately to be honest - its a mad house! If I was him I'd try to stay in B.A as long as possible!
Its a pity for Argentina too, because he is a real top, top quality player. I can't believe he hasn't played more often for the national team - he's 25/26 and only has 3 or 4 caps I think. Anyone know why that is? Maybe he slipped under the radar, playing for a small team like Majorca?
Anyway thanks again Katy.

Re: Newcastle sign Argentine Guttierez!
Guttierez is not good enough for the national team IMO. He's certainly class but not world class by any means. For Argentine national team where a tactician can fit him? On the expanse of ... ? And so on.
Ciao all

Re: Newcastle sign Argentine Guttierez!
Ok Juan, being Argentinian you must have seen him play more often than me so I will trust your judjement! Also, I don't know who Argentina have playing on the wings these days, maybe it is someone even better...
All I know is, from what I've seen from a couple of performances this season, he looks like a top, top footballer - good touch, pace, power, good passer on either foot, and an excellent attitude to top it all off. It's been a long time since I've been as impressed with a Newcastle player.
One more thing Juan - what do you Argies think of Coloccini? Is he highy rated over there? He looked absolutely great in his first couple of matches but has since looked a bit weak (no doubt affected by the crisis at the club, to be fair to him).
As you'd expect from an Argentinian defender, he looks hard as nails, but is he regarded as really world class over there in Argentina? We certainly paid big money for him! Is he a leader of the defence? We desperately need a strong, experienced character in defence, but at the minute it is hard to tell with Fabricio, because he hardly speaks a word of English! And as any British person will tell you, Newcastle is not the best place to go if you want to learn to speak good English beacause of our funny dialect, so unfortunately it could take a long time for him to adapt!
Cheers bud,
Richie

Re: Newcastle sign Argentine Guttierez!
Galgo (Jonás Gutiérrez) is the Sáenz Peña attraction for Alfio Basile. Just like Duscher and Scaloni for José in the campaign (qualifiers) for mundial 2006 (some may have memories for that ?). I don't dislike either Alfio or Galgo but i can't either take ex Vélez Sarsfield winger as first choice anyway. Argentine arrogance ? Yes perhaps!
Re-Fabricio: Fabricio in his early days was dubbed as next Ayala. He did promise a lot. He's tough cookie and plays a hard man in the defence (the role of a classic Argentine defender in a backline). He's best at right side of the defence in a three men backline. That's where his expertise lies in. I mean like under:
---Fabricio -- -- Samuel -- -- Heinze
He can play in centre of a four men backline but in that case he's too vulnerable against pacey and dribbling attack. He's not rated highly than Gonzalo Rodríguez where i live. We don't play a three men back line any more (these days) and his role to play all centre is a bit risky. But that's Argentina, thankfuly blessed with so many options.
To be honest i feel disaapointed looking back in years following his progress. He did well in these years but noway showed the next Ayala tag given to him. May be that's the gas he has taken or may be he was never good enough or perhaps the comparison was injustice and did put the kid under pressure which didn't help him.
Having written the above as how Argentino rate him, no one deny him either. Lets say he didn't do what was thought of him. He hasn't raised his game.
He will work well in England (better than serie'a) while leaving España. Newcastle United is a good club to be playing in as far as Fabricio is concerned, Richie. You're right the language and culture barriers will be difficult to adapt but that's the professional football of modern era. He better gets on with it.
Richie, the Argentine duo in your ranks is okey in my books. I hope Fabricio and Galgo will serve better for your club.
Vamos Argentina
Ciao,
Juan

Re: Newcastle sign Argentine Guttierez!
Hi Juan,
Thanks very much for all the information mate, I really appreciate it. It's true that you are spoilt for talented footballers in Argentina, so its natural that you would be less impressed by Jonas than me! Argentina just seems to keep producing the most skillful players year after year. My hometown used to have a reputation for that too (Gascoigne, Waddle, Bobby Charlton, Bryan Robson, Beardsley and Shearer to name just a few) but sadly we have not produced a really world class talent for too long. Carrick is the only Newcastle lad playing at the top level these days, but he plays for the wrong team (sorry Katy!). The kids here just don't play as much football these days, it's as simple as that. Like everyone else on this forum, I am grateful to Argentina for keeping the spirit of beautiful football alive!
I hope you are right that Guti and Colo will both turn out to be successful at Newcastle, but with the current crisis at the club, I wouldn't be surprised to see them both leave in the January transfer window to be honest, and wouldn't blame them if they did!
Thanks again
Richie
