I don't think there was a 'confirmed' offer, was there?? There were rumours that Spurs were also considering to buy him. In fact, at one time, Middlesborough were also rumoured to be interested. The only English team I know who definitely put in an offer for him was Man Utd in 1998, but ubfortunately Trappatoni persuaded him to stay with Fiorentina. Part of me was glad he was staying with Fio but, obviously, I was DESPERATE for him to come here! Just imagine if he'd been here for the 98/99 season when we won the treble!!!!  Anyone else remember Chelsea's offer?? |

Yeah i remember Real Madrid ,Barcelona and AC Milan all wanted him but to no avail.Anyway I'm glad he stayed he is so humble that's what I love about him.

Wow...MAnU actaully made an offer in 98. I did not know that. Was it after the WC? Awhh....the good old days. I always seem to miss him playing whenever there is a big tournament around. I know he never played in the Euro, but it's just something about summer and football that gets the memory floods to open. |

Yep, I remember them making an offer, and there was always loads of speculation that he would go there because Ferguson made no secret of how highly he rated Bati. He was always looking for a big strong goal scorer like Bati to replace Mark Hughes who was getting old. His first choice was Shearer but when he came back to Newcastle in 96 he started courting Bati! Katy you probably remember all this better than me! It's a great story that he styed with Fiorentina so long, as there's no doubt he could have had the pick of the top teams in Europe. I don't remember Chelsea tying to sign him though! Maybe that was towards the end of his career, when he went to Inter instead? |

Yeah, Richie... I remember it SO well, I've still got the press cuttings!  Fergie wanted both Bati AND Ortega, I was over the moon thinking it was gonna happen! I was absolutely heartbroken when it didn't!   That was when I took my first trip to Florence... Nov 1998.. if he wasn't coming here then I would HAVE to go there!  And that's when it all started. I found Jas' site on the internet, we became friends and before I knew it I was running the forum!!!  God... can you believe it was 10 years ago!!!

WOW....that's right. It IS ten years since the 98 WC. How on earth could it have been TEN years already? Does that really mean I'm ten years older too?   Those were some fantastic times. IT just occured to me that this Sunday it'll be ten years since I officially discovered Bati in that evening match in Saint-Etienne. It took me about 2 years after that before I found this site. I'm really glad I did. We've certainly had some good times here My only regret is that I never got the chance to see him play. I would have loved to go to Florence or Rome, but it never happened.
