Re: Euro 2008 thread

I will be supporting Portugal as well, because that is where my girlfriend is from! If they concentrate on playing football and not diving I think no-one will be able to touch them! It's pretty impressive that such a small population can produce so many top players!
Spain and Croatia will probably be good to watch, and I'm looking forward to see Nasri and Benzema turning it on for France!
I'm glad England aren't in it, because it means I won't be nervous about the hooligans disgracing the country again!

Re: Euro 2008 thread

Cannavaro out injured for Italy, that is a big blow for them! They normally have loads of good defenders though so will probably still be strong.

Re: Euro 2008 thread

Feel SO sorry for Cannavaro, especially as Italy are in the so called 'Group of Death'!

Richie, I totally agree with you about the 'hooligans' that are associated with the England Team. Although it's not as bad as it used to be, I almost heave a sigh of relief to think that we will at least be spared the embarrassment of witnessing scenes that we have done in the past!

Anyway... here is the schedule for the first round of the competition....

Re: Euro 2008 thread

YEY!!

The Euro's had begun. I always love the summers with the big football-tournaments.

My support obviously goes to Italy. Norway isn't in it(no suprise there) so I'm free to throw all my support at my favorite country. A bit scared looking at their group though. It's going to be three very difficult matches for them. Fingers crossed.

I've also always sort of liked the Czech Republic, and Portugal of course. Knowing me I'll probably pick up another favorite during the tournament as well.

Too many footballers, too little time.

Re: Euro 2008 thread

So far so good for Portugal then! Although they lost their heads a bit after the Czechs equalised, they calmed down and remembered to play properly in the second half!

It's turning out to be a great tournament! Most of the good teams seem to have quite poor defences, which is making for a good spectacle!

Here's hoping Donandoni starts with Cassano as he's one of the best players to watch when he's on song, and Italy badly need a bit of inspiration!

Re: Euro 2008 thread

What a comeback by Turkey last night!!! They are now my second favourite team inthe tournament... If Portugal don't win I hope Turkey do. They play decent passing football and have a lot of passion - the under-motivated millionaires who play for England could do with taking a leaf out of their books!
OK, we all know that passion spills over sometimes and they let their tempers get the better of them (what was the goalie thinking in the last minute???) but that's better than watching Gerard and chums mincing about and letting a less talented Croatia team walk all over them!
Good to see Nihat having his moment in the sun at long last, after being one of the most under-rated strikers in Europe for years! His second goal was straight out of the Bati textbook!

Re: Euro 2008 thread

WOW... there's SO much football on at the moment, there's hardly time to do ANYTHING else!!!

Yeah, Richie, the Turkey v Czech Republic match was REALLY exciting.. they deserve to go through. Glad Portugal are through too.

Don't have a lot of hope for Italy tonight though.
Holland are already through, so there is every chance that Romania will win, meaning that Italy will be out, even if they beat France!

Should be a good match, but I'm not holding my breath!

WooooHooooo!!! I was WRONG!!!!

Italy are THROUGH!!!
Good on ya Holland.. I honestly thought that they would want Italy out.. and with 9 substitutions, I thought it was a given that Romania would win! But I was WRONG!!!!

Bring on Spain!

Re: Euro 2008 thread

Hahahaha, glad you enjoyed the match Katy! I didn't doubt Holland would try their best - I think you've been listening to Fergie and his conspiracy theories a bit too much! Just kidding!
I would have liked to see Romania go through but I guess Holland's reserve's were too strong.
It'll be a big test for Portugal aganst Germany but I reckon if they remember to play their natural game the likes of Ronaldo should be too good for Germany's rubbish defence! Hope it doesn't go to penners, because we all know who will win that!

Re: Euro 2008 thread

I was gutted when Portugal went out!
I blame Ronaldo and Scolari! All this in the news about Ronaldo/Real Madrid and Scolari/Chelsea MUST have unsettled the squad!
They should have kept their mouths firmly CLOSED until after the tournament.

I'm glad Turkey got through again... it sure was exciting at the end.

Yep, Aligol.. tomorrow night's match between Spain and Italy should be a blinder... can't wait.

First of all. CONGRATULATION MARIELA.
It must be an exiting and wonderful time for you. Your baby is beautiful.

As for the Euro, my teams seem to be dropping out one after the other. Still got Italy though, and they played very well against France. Big thank you to The Netherlands!

Somehow I seem to keep missing the best matches, but nothing will be able to tear me away from the tv tomorrow night. Forza Italia.

Kay....what about all this stuff around Ronaldo. Do you think ManU will let him go?

Re: Euro 2008 thread

Well Holland were rubbish weren't they?! I'm backing Turkey all the way now! Even though Emre is in my bad books as he has just left Newcastle for Fenerbache after three years of sitting on his bum there and being paid handsomely for it!
Yeah I agree with you about Ronaldo Katy! that was such a selfish way to behave and must have had an effect on the team... and also inconsiderate to the Man United supporters who have paid his wages for five years and showed alot of patience with him early on, when he was nowhere near the player he is today! Sadly it's typical of proffesional footballers these days though isn't it?!

Re: Euro 2008 thread

What a game by Russia last night. I love how their attack-minded football. Guus Hiddink must be a bit of a miracle worker, I wonder how it felt to obliterate his home country.

Thumbs up for Russia. They are really growing on me. Too bad they will be up against Italy(I'm jumping ahead here, I know. But I'm determined to be optimistic) next.

Unfortunately it didn't happen.

Before the beginning of EURO 2008 my husband was joking that Russia will be the next european champion, now i'm wondering if he was really right?

Re: Euro 2008 thread

SAD that Italy are out but it wasn't really a good match was it??

I'm supporting Turkey now, like you Richie!
Actually I don't really mind WHO wins, as long as it's NOT Germany!!!

Here's the schedule for the semis....

Wednesday 25th June
Germany v Turkey

Thursday 26th June
Russia v Spain

Linda... the Ronaldo fiasco!

After the CL final he said he was staying at Man U. Then he goes to play with Portugal (and listens to Scolari) and he now says he wants to go to Real!!
Of COURSE Scolari would talk him into going to Spain... Scolari will be managing Chelsea next season, so he would LOVE it if Man U were without Ronaldo, because we are Chelsea's biggest threat!

No idea what's gonna happen now... Man U say he's not for sale, Alex says he's going over his dead body and Ronaldo says he doesn't care who he upsets!

Alex is on holiday and says he'll talk some sense into him when he comes back at the end of the week so we'll have to wait and see! I know what I'd do with him!!!

Re: Euro 2008 thread

ARGHHHH
Italy out too. I have no teams left. I've might actually have to support Russia, at least they are playing some attractive football. I agree that ITaly wasn't particularly fiesty against Spain, but SPain didn't impress either. I hope Russia beats them

Thanks for explaining the whole Ronaldo saga Katy. I've seen bits and pieces of it in the Euro coverage, but didn't understand how serious the rumours were. I can totally see Scolari trying to get Ronaldo to swallow the Real bait. I don't condone, but it's actually quite smart. But if ManU refuses to sell, does it matter what Ronaldo wants? I know most clubs have to let a player go if he really wants to, but in this case I think I would have made an exception

Re: Euro 2008 thread

I wouldn't want to be Ronaldo when he next sees Ferguson! He might be 70 years old but he will still give little Ronaldo the fright of his lifetime!!! All those millions in the bank won't help at all when it's just him and the man from Glasgow in a room together... oh, to be a fly on the wall!!! I don't have a lot of time for Ferguson but I must admit I've got a lot of respect for the fear he can put into people!
Christiano seems to have been Fergie's golden boy since he arrived at Man U and maybe thinks he can do and say what he wants, but that could soon be about to change!

Re: Euro 2008 thread

Glad to hear you are behind the Turks as well Katy!

It's just a pity that most of the squad seems to be injured or suspended for the semi! The players that are left are really going to have to play out of their skins to get through it... But they're all professional footballers so there's no reason they can't give it a good shot. And Germany's defense is absolutely rubbish so if they can keep Podolski, Ballack and Klose quiet they might just do it!

Re: Euro 2008 thread

Germany to the final, but the Turks put up a very good fight. I thought they would get extra time for sure when they scored four minutes before full time, but somehow Germany always comes back.

I don't know with the rest of you, but here we lost the tv connection in the end of the game. So our national tv-station broadcasted the game through a mobile phone- web-camera. Don't think I've ever experienced that before

Russia and Spain are underway, still 0-0.

Re: Euro 2008 thread

ALL our teams are out!!!!

Turkey DEFINITELY deserved to go through... it was a travesty that Germany won!

Well I'm quite glad that Spain won, mainly because I think they will have more chance of beating Germany than Russia would have done. Also... I like Fernando Torres but I can't usually 'support' him because he plays for LIVERPOOOL.. so now I have an excuse to cheer him on!

So it's SPAIN for me, tomorrow night, without a doubt (I'm almost scared of saying it!)

Who is it for you... anybody????

Yep, Turkey were my team of the tournament - they showed the best spirit and attitude by far, it's just a pity they suffered so much with injuries and suspensions!! And maybe they just left it late one too many times - but he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword!
