US to host freindly against Argentina

Top-ranked Argentina will play the United States in a friendly on 8 June at Giants Stadium near New York in what will be the final tuneup for both before FIFA World Cup 2010™ qualifying matches.

US Soccer announced Thursday that Argentina will visit East Rutherford, New Jersey for the final US men's friendly at the former FIFA World Cup venue, which is being replaced by a new Meadowlands stadium.

Argentina is 6-2 against the US men, who last beat their South American rivals 1-0 in Washington in 1999.

The Argentine squad ranks second in South American qualifying for the 2010 finals with a 3-1 record. It will return home for a qualifier June 14 against Colombia and visit Brazil three days later to face their arch-rivals.

The US team will open South Africa 2010 qualifying in 15 June in Los Angeles against Barbados in the first leg of a home and home series that concludes on the Caribbean island 21 or 22 June.

US tuneups for those matches include playing England at London on 28 May and Spain at Santander on 4 June before meeting Argentina.

"Argentina is clearly one of the best teams in the world and playing against an opponent of that caliber is a great opportunity for our team," US coach Bob Bradley said.

"We have put together a very good schedule to help us prepare for World Cup qualifying. We expect a good crowd at Giants Stadium and we are looking forward to an exciting atmosphere."

I sure will, Katy. I am so excited. This will be my first time watching the albiceleste live. I'm hoping they bring out all the big guns.

Re: US to host freindly against Argentina

I promised I would come back and tell you all how it was so here it is.
This was my first time seeing my favorite team play live and palpitations of my heart as I got close to the stadium that day were almost out of control. When I get to the parking lot, to my great surprise, most of the people there were Argentina supporters. And let me tell you, those guys were crazy. It's really not just about the game for them but the whole experience is a real party....everyone wearing jerseys, chanting, flags everywhere, drums. It was definitely a noisy affair.
Inside the stadium, it's breathtaking to see that whole see of blue and white. There were plenty of USA fans there also but if I had to estimate, I would say it was at least 65/35 Argentina fans. I sat in the Argentina supporters section and we did not stop chanting the whole game. There were a few unruly people there unfortunately but security was very tight...maybe a bit too harsh at times. The USA fans did a decent job of cheering themselves.
The match itself was a bit disappointing. It definitely was not one of our better performances though the team was still superior to the US. If only Cruz could have finished one of his many good chances. Once again, without Riquelme, the team lacks organization and gave away possession much more than I would have liked. The defense played very well but then again, it was the US. Best game by Heinze in a while. Messi played okay in his half and there were a few flashes from Kun. Overall, a very underwhelming job by the boys. They probably deserved to win but a tie is a fair outcome also.
It was still an experience that will stay with me for a long time. My only regret was that I could not get to see my two favorite players, Riquelme & Crespo. Aside from that, I had a blast.

Oh, absolutely. I had a blast. It would have been even better if it was a few years ago when Bati was still playing.

I was there! Right in the front row, at the middle of the pitch! Managed to convince my bf to spend the $300 for the ticket - although he and my room-mate sat in cheaper seats, not being as fanatical as I am. Not the most lively game I've ever seen (the reported temp on the field was 115 - yuck!) but I don't care! I was so happy to see the Albiceleste live! Yay!
