Mare cycling in winter and showing signs of colic?

I have a mare that coliced(?) in August and later (next day)she was in a very strong heat.
We had determined that she was pregnant prior to this incident.
Then in the end of Nov. the same thing happened, imediate stress, colic like symptoms, ... severe sweating, and showing signs of discomfort!
During this crisis she passed manure.
Again, the next day she was in a strong heat!

I was thinking that the pain is not gastrinal(SP?), but perhaps a reproductive disorder.
This mare has had 2 foal with no complications except that she has difficulty staying pregnant.
We have always had to breed her several times before she catches, and then by early Jan, she seems to be open again!
She is also overwieght.
There is no equine vet in my area, and definitely no ultra-sound!
Any ideas?

Re: Mare cycling in winter and showing signs of colic?

Interesting...I don't want to alarm you but I lost a mare this past Easter Sunday due to colic the day before her actual due date...I just thought she was in foal-colic symptoms and labour signs are quite similar...
I ruled out colic because not only as it the day before her due date but she had a good sized, healthy looking poop while I was walking her around-was just shaky, sweaty and not eating, she would drink a little though...
Finally the vet arrived, about 12 hrs later, neither of us thought colic... looked at the insides of eyelids and nostrils and did a belly tap. A bunch of bad stuff came out and he told me this mare has to be put down right now. So had my cry and held her while he checked to see if the foal was still alive-but said no,that it was dead. Had another cry. He asked if i wanted an autopsy and I said yes, mostly because she was a free lease broodmare and I wanted to assure her owner that I did everything I could for her. So he heavily sedated her for the cesarean, he pulled out her intestine first to show me where the twist was etc and as an afterthought pulled out the foal and sort of tossed it to the side and went to his truck to get more equipment to euthanize the mare. The foal was a very loud (almost white)filly and noticed through her skin that her heart was beating!! So yelled to the vet,"Hey! She's alive!" he said "no way" and I said "Yes Way!!" and the rest is history-the mare of coursestill had to be put down, the filly fought for her life for a week in the vet clinic where I moved into, lol, got well and came home and the rest is history. We're not overly religous around here but it was kind of wierd having her mom die on Easter sunday and this filly basically rose from the dead...kind of like a resurrection...was wierd. She even had scalpel cuts on her from where the vet cut through into the foal-not realizing that it was still alive so was not being overly cautious. We named her Easter Lily aka "Lily the silly filly". Anyway-point is-this mare lost her last foal late in pregnancy due to some kind of colic as well and I think another one didn't make it to term at some point as well-I wonder if your mare just simply isn't meant to have babies....that was the conclusiion we came to with this mare.Unfortunately it was too late for her though.:O(
I just wouldn't want to see anyone go through what we did-the vet bills alone were more than I'll ever dream of getting for this filly..
