West Nile Virus???

Just this past Easter my daughters little pinto pony went on to greener pastures. To make a long story short, on a Wednesday night I had taken Coco in out of the field for my daughter to ride when I noticed him not walking right on his hind end. He seemed stiff and a bit uncordinated. I check him out from head to toe and found nothing out of the ordinary. Thursday morning I called out Dr Dolphin who came shortly later and check Coco out. We suspected EPM or some kind of nerve damage. West Nile wasn't even a thought in our heads. Dr Dolphin took a blood sample and told us to keep a close eye on him if his condition worsened. By Friday night Coco's whole hind end was paralized. Our poor little pony was so afraid, as he didn't understand what was happening to him and all he could do was sit up like a dog. Being the Easter long weekend there was no one willing to help us. We had made the decision to put him down as his paralysis was starting to take affect of his front legs. The blood results came back as all negative. Coco wasn't a part of our rescue. I had bought him privetly as a pony for my, at that time 2 year old daughter, and paid a pretty penny for him. We had Coco 2 years before tragidy struck, and he has always been a healthy, sound pony. Just the other day, I was reading up on diabeties in horses and came across a section on West Nile Virus. All of Coco symtoms make me now believe that he had West Nile. I should also mention that Coco was vaccinated for West Nile last year.

If it's not West Nile and anyone reading this might think it's something else please let me know. I live in Surrey and it's scarey to think that West Nile has reached us here.

I remember you telling me about this...I thought it almost sounded like HYPP...which isný all that common but WN-that's scary!

Re: West Nile Virus???

Sorry to hear about your pony Alina. Vaccination isn't 100% if it did have WNV. How old was the pony? Could it have had a tumor or some swelling putting pressure on the spinal nerves?

Re: West Nile Virus???

Coco was 6 years old and a true pony. I believe he was Shetland / Welsh cross. Because we were unable to get an autopsy done it still plauges me that I don't know what really happened to Coco. It was over a course of 3 days that Coco's condition deteriated, and by that Friday night Coco couldn't move at all.
I don't think I'll ever know, but it is comforting to know that he had a little girl and family who loved him to his last day, and that we were there when he left for greener pastures.
