Reading

Hello,

Well I now belong to the PDS club and I’m anxiously awaiting my next doctor visit to see if I have any peripheral vision loss etc. I had a routine eye examine when the problem was discovered. I’ve stopped running until I can get a handle on my current condition. My pressures were 20/21 so that seems to be good for now. I was interested in a comment about the effects of computer screens and eye pressure. I do large amounts of reading and my eyes are strained a great deal…does the mechanical process of focusing cause more pigment to be rubbed off so to speak? Actually I’m just looking for an excuse to stop exercising and watch more TV LOL.

Re: Reading

Hi Mike,

There is no good evidence that VDU use increases the likelihood of having Pigment Dispersion Syndrome, progressing to Pigmentary Glaucoma or having a more worse end result from glaucoma damage.

There is some evidence that the act of accommodation, the process which a young person uses to alter their eyes focus to look at a near object, causes a change in iris shape which can lead to more pigment being shed. It is this pigment which can clog the drainage angle, causing the Intra-Ocular Pressure to rise and leading to PG.

This effect has also been noted in exercise, both impact related & impact free.

Before we all start reading our papers from across the room it should be remembered that this same process happens every time we blink. And has not been linked to worse outcomes.

Personally, I still run, swim, use my computer and read often and it will take a lot more evidence than there currently is to alter that.

I hope I've been clear and if not feel free to post again.

Dave

Re: Reading

Thanks,

Well it seems that everything I’m reading tells me that there is no direct relationship to those that have a condition (PDS) that gets worse (Pigmentary Glaucoma) and those that stop running, reading, blinking, roller coaster ridding…etc. If I’m getting this straight just live life, have your eyes checked repeatedly, and hope that you are in the 2/3 group that does not develop PG. If you do develop PG then there are drops and surgeries that can help manage the disease. :)

Re: Reading

You're right, the most important things are keeping your appointments and taking your medication (if applicable).

It would also be worth getting immediate relations checked.
