Laser surgery
Hi guys, Recently been diagnosed with IDS. The consultant reccomended laser surgery. The description he gave was that the iris was cut, and it would move away from lense stopping further iris dispersion. Has anyone had any experience of this surgery? Thanks |

Re: Laser surgery
Not personally but it's a pretty safe procedure that seems to work on the majority of patients. Side effects include mild iris inflammation (which will be prevented with drops) and initial discomfort. Complications include glare, corneal burns and of course failure of procedure needing re-treatment. I know that others on this forum have had this procedure and might be able to give you a more personnel testimony. Dave |

Re: Laser surgery
Thanks Dave, Its a bit worrying the thought of surgery on the Iris. Thankyou for the info. The possible side effects sound a bit unpleasant, but hopefully i shouldn't get them. Sorry to ask, whats glare? Thanks again, Rob |

Re: Laser surgery
Rob, I had this surgery 8 years ago. My ophthalmologist lazored five holes in each iris to change the pressures and allow the pigmentation and pressures to be released. The surgery was a piece of cake -- totally awake and holding my eye open by myself. I am super happy to report that the holes are still clear, open and doing their job. Best wishes and don't worry..... |

Re: Laser surgery
Glare can be thought of as the dazzle effect that people can experience with bright light (often reflections). It can be sub divided into types (disability, discomfort & veiling) but it's pretty rare after this type of surgery. Dave |

Re: Laser surgery
Thanks guys, I feel a bit better now. Just wait and see i suppose. Did it cure you PDS then Ruth?. As thats the impression i got from the specialist, as the iris dispersion can no longer occur. Thanks. |

Re: Laser surgery
In theory, Yes (assuming you are an ideal candidate) In practice, no-one knows for certain. There is no literature base (to the best of my knowledge) to give us an answer. Individual ophthalmologists will have their own records and their have been many small or poor quality studies but nothing definitive. We do know that: the procedure alters iris shape & reduces pigment in the anterior chamber. Both of these are good things. But no-one has demonstrated a reduction in Intra-Ocular Pressure long term and we know there is a high probability of short term pigment release and IOP spike. |

Re: Laser surgery
I just recently had a laser surgery done on my eyes. I opted for this instead of eye drops, because I'm rather forgetful. It felt like someone thumping me in the eye, and afterward wasnt fun either, my eyes burned like if you stood infront of a fan without blinking for like five mins. I know you probably already had your surgery, I just wanted to put my two cents in lol. |
