PDS in non-caucasians

I have mentioned before in posts that Pigment Dispersion Syndrome occurs almost exclusively in Caucasians. I'm beginning to revise my opinion & thought I ought to mention it.

It has been reported in African-Americans, but most in the United States this is often of mixed ancestry. African-American patients with PDS reported a significantly greater percentage of Caucasian ancestry and were more lightly complected than controls.

Rare cases have been reported in Asia.

It has always been known that Afro-Caribbeans can have liberated pigment floating in their anterior chamber. But other signs of PDS have not been reported.

Recent reports have shown that using infra-red photography you can find iris defects in Afro-Caribbean PDS suspects.

This is very interesting (to me anyways). Afro-Caribbeans are at higher risk of Glaucoma, and although some risk factors have been identified, we're not 100% sure why. Maybe PDS is part of the answer.

Oh and the other cool thing that I found recently is the rather speculative line:

Most likely, the genetic mutation (that causes PDS) arose on the Anatolian plateau about 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.

Which is pretty cool...

Re: PDS in non-caucasians

Thanks for that Dave, very much appreciated.
How did you find out about the mutated gene arose on the Anatolian Plateau, and does that mean we could all (possibly) have Turkish origins?

Re: PDS in non-caucasians

It comes from the differing PDS prevalence by location.
Pigment dispersion syndrome occurs almost exclusively Caucasians.
It has been reported in African-Americans, but African-American patients with PDS reported a significantly greater percentage of Caucasian ancestry and were more lightly complected than controls.
Rare cases have been reported in Asia.
We have seen PDS in patients from Ethiopia and eastward into India, where it appears to stop.
Thus, using best understanding of human development, the genetic mutation arose on the Anatolian plateau about 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.
One would expect to find it in the Philippines and other areas with high admixtures of European genes, but no reports have yet come forth.

I'm not sure I understand it that well...
