Abnormality in length of nerve
My eye doctor said I have a 30% chance of getting Glaucoma. My pressures are fine. He's concerned because of a small abnormality in the length of my nerve.(?) I'm 52 years old. Can you elaborate, please. I don't take eye Rx. Thank you. Laurie Paulsen, California, U.S.A. |

Re: Abnormality in length of nerve
I'm really not sure that I can. Abnormal optic nerve length is , as far as I know, both unlikely to be measured & meaningless. The optic nerve is around 50mm long, and although there is individual variation, it tends to be in the posterior half which would require MRI or CT imaging to assess. Even if you had this (which would be unlikely if you were just being examined with regard to Pigment Dispersion Syndrome) I'm unaware of clinical correlations, especially in regard to glaucoma. Monitoring of the Optic Nerve Head (the front part you can see when looking at the back of the eye) is very important in glaucoma management, as this is the site of damage. What is looked at is the thickness of the nerve fibre rim and depth of the cup (the gap which nerve fibres don't fill). I would guess it is some abnormality of this that your ophthalmologist was referring to. But without more information I'm not sure I can add anymore. Sorry I couldn't help. |
