ocular pressure not coming down

I was diagnosed at 28, pressure 21. Watched for years. Now I am 53 and have been on Travantan drops for 4 yrs. One year prior I had an adverse reaction to Zithromax (antibiotic) and had to be one oral steroids for 9 months. I detoxed constantly to avoid side effects as I knew this was not great for this disease.
Pressure now 32 in right eye and 24 in left. Seems medication not helping. I had never heard of the exercise warnings, nor the computer screen ( I am in front of computer all day at work). My specialist wants to see the big specialist at University of Michigan hospital to explore surgery options (or different meds). I have not had symptoms of pressure normally, nor do I have headaches. Caffeine definitely increases the feeling of pressure in the eyes. I drink a ton of water and never noticed, now not sure whether I should cut down on water. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you for the informative website

Re: ocular pressure not coming down

Hi there,

First things first, there is no good evidence that Visual Display Unit (VDU) work causes Pigment Dispersion Syndrome (PDS), increases the chance of progression from PDS to Pigmentary Glaucoma (PG). There is one, very poor study, finding a higher prevalence of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG, the most common type of glaucoma) in Japanese VDU workers and it got a lot of press (at least in the UK) but VDU work is not something we (PDS sufferers) should worry about.

There is pretty good evidence that caffeine causes a transient rise in intra-ocular pressure in people with POAG. This has not been shown to effect visual outcome.
There is also pretty good evidence that exercise (especially regular impact sports) can cause an increase in the changes seen in PDS. Again this has not be shown to effect visual outcome, either through increasing risk of progression to PG or making PG worse.

Drinking water causes a transient rise in IOP. This can be more apparent depending on the gluacoma drops you are on. Again, this has not been shown to effect visual outcome.

From your post, you're not doing anything that I would either stop, or advise one of my patients with PDS to stop. It sounds like your current management is sub-optimal and that is being looked at. But as long as you're being fully compliant with your medical treatment, I think you're doing all you should be.
Hope this helps.

Re: ocular pressure not coming down

Dear Dave and Zig Zag,
thanks for the replies. I have been doing my own research and found a supplement called Rutin that is good for circulation and capillaries. My doctor was describing my diagnoses and said "Think of neuropathy as well as toxins in the eyes". I decided to "detox" for 10 days. I am using Garden of Life easy cleanse and eliminated all caffeines, (not that I ingest much)alcohol and meat. I am going to move to a heavy liver cleanse as I looked up eye ailments in Chinese medicine and the eye connect to the gallbladder and then the liver.
Dave mentioned physical activity. I do water aerobics and take dance classes. Is that too bouncy-joggy? If so, I will modify.
Again, thanks for all the information -Michigan
Dave

Re: ocular pressure not coming down

I have never heard of this Rutin. Do you know what it contains? I'd be interested to know. I am intrinsically skeptical of such things as there often have no evidence basis.
If you are looking for supplements then I would suggest Ginkgo Biloba. There is some limited evidence that it has neuroprotective properties related to small vessel blood flow.
But, like all supplements, they can have health side effects and drug interactions. Talk to a pharmacist before starting anything.

Re: ocular pressure not coming down

Thanks for a quick response, Dave. I researched online and came up with Rutin. A product called Trylyzme has Rutin in it. I do not know what it is.
I have taken Ginko Biloba for years.
