zig zags
Hi, Can anyone tell me why, I get a sudden onset of a small flashing light in one eye that progresses to zig zags of lights in both eyes. Sometimes left with a headache and sometimes not.? Just got new glasses as I needed a new prescription, and I thought that would help!. They last for about 20 mins. Just sitting there and it happens! Thank you jo. |

Re: zig zags
Hi Jo, My first thought would be that it is a form of migraine related aura. The typical presentation is with white zig zags that form an arc in your vision, slowly increasing in size, moving round the side of your visual field. This is most commonly present in both eyes, but you can get ophthalmic migraine which is only in one eye. The cause of this is a spreading wave of abnormal electrical activity, normally in the occipital lobe, (the area of the brain at the back of your head), which contains the visual cortex. This spreads forward (causing the aura to increase) until it hits the main cerebral arteries which react to the electrical activity by going into spasm causing nausea, headache and the other symptoms of migraine. The questions are : Does this pattern fit with your experience (slow extension of white zig zag, precedes headache)? Is there a family history of migraine? If so, we probably have a diagnosis. But other possibilities should be ruled out by your optometrist or ophthalmologist. And may already have been if you have recently been examined. Hope this helps. |

Re: zig zags
Hi Dave, Thank you and yes, that is exactly what happens. There is no history of migraine in my family. It seems it is just mine! Thank you for explaining it to me, don't think its food related as it just happens, and have tried all the "foods not to eat test". Thank you once again. jo. |

Re: zig zags
Unlikely. Although there is pretty good evidence that migraine sufferers "see" flicker and other visual stimuli, often present on VDUs differently from people who don't suffer migraine, I don't believe it has been identified that computer work is a trigger. But we're getting a bit far from my area so I could easily be wrong (In fact, I could be wrong on everything I post, just slightly less easily!)! Dave |

Re: zig zags
Hi Zig zags, you mentions foods not to eat. Are their foods to avoid with this problem? I am new to the site and need to learn all I can. |

Re: zig zags
I also have PDS (diagnosed a few months ago) and had one episode of flashing and then zig zag lights in one eye. After an emergency trip to the eye doctor, I was told I have opthalmic migraine. I had never had a migraine headache, ever, but my mom has a history of them and also OM's. Since then, the zig zags have not come back. The doctor said not to panic if they come back, just to take it easy until it goes away. It was definitely a scary, and also psychedlic, experience!

Re: zig zags
Thank you Jean, as usuall it is so good to see I am not alone in all this, that is what is so helpful with this site(or lack of it)! Also thank you Michigan. About the food thing, some people say, chocolate, coffee, cheese, wine, can trigger these attacks off. I have spent months cutting them out of my diet, but still get these zig zags.So glad as I love chocolate. The list has many more foods that can trigger them off, but I am not so sure. But worth looking up and trying, if there is something you may eat, or drink in excess. I just thought the computer screen could be one. Not that I have ever eaten one. Thank you. jo. |
