Swimming Goggles and Intra-Ocular Pressure

I have just been reading the International Glaucoma Review (one of the many things I do to avoid real real work) and read a report of an interesting study from New Zealand.
They found that the wearing of swimming goggles, for periods of 20mins or more, raised up IOP by up to 9mmHG (a highly significant amount, both clinically and statistically). Smaller goggles causes a larger rise.
Now I haven't read the study in full, it doesn't seem to be available yet, but if this is correct it moves swimming to the top of the exercise is bad for your eyes league table.
Makes you wonder why we worry about the impact sports doesn't it.

Heck - that would encompass scuba diving and paintballing, too, wouldn't it? At this rate, we won't be supposed to do anything!

I believe it would be a result of air pressure, i.e. the water tight seal.
So yes for scuba diving but maybe not for skiing an paint-balling.
I don't believe either of these have the same seals but haven't done either enough to be sure.

Re: Swimming Goggles and Intra-Ocular Pressure

It would be interesting to find out whether the IOP's of submariners increase... but how would we find that out? I've received emails from pilots, but as yet, no one from the Navy. Does anyone know anyone that spends time in a submarine? Are there any other professions that need pressurised conditions?
