Just diagnosed with PDS - what next?
At a routine contact lens check my optomotrist diagnosed me with a 'text book' case of PDS (a big surprise as I have no symptoms that I know of!). I have been wearing glasses / contact lenses for 10 years and have had eye check ups twice a year - with no problems. So my questions are: 1) How has it apparently developed so much in the last 6 months and 2) My doctor has booked me an appointment with the eye hospital but I have to wait 3 months, which is a worry. Should I go private (expensive) and be seen sooner? I'm slightly short sighted - wear daily disposable contacts for sport, and glasses for driving/TV. I also do a lot of sport - surfing, cycling, circuit training, jogging, pilates etc, and was very encouraged by Dave's comments that I shouldn't stop these! The other post I wanted to read is someone who was diagnosed with PDS 20 years ago and has had no ill-effects - is that possible - and hopefully probable? Many thanks for advice |

Re: Just diagnosed with PDS - what next?
1st off, welcome to the board. 2nd. PDS is almost always symptom free so it is not surprising that you didn't notice anything. 3rd (your 1st question). Your PDS has probably (not 100%) always been there (from puberty) but has been steadily been getting easier to spot. PDS has a precise definition, it required two out of three signs to be present, and I think it is fair to say that most UK optometrists never look for one and don't look for the other two routinely. As this is coming from a UK optometrist. 4th (your second question). I'd be happy to wait (current waits in my area can be 18 weeks). Your optometrist (and ophthalmologist) has a mechanism to get you seen sooner if it will effect your outcome so my assumption is that you require a routine referral and that is what you're getting. But I should say that I am an avowed socialised medicine junkie. 5th. As for progression from PDS to Pigmentary Glaucoma (PG), we have only started to get a good idea quite recently. Best estimates are currently 10% at 5yrs post diagnosis and 15% at ten yrs. Longer than that we don't know, although it should be said that PDS tends to settle down naturally as we get older. However, it should be remembered that PG can have no effect on your visual experience and can be (comparatively) easy to manage medically. Hope this helps. If not, feel free to post again. Dave |

Dave Many thanks for these responses - much appreciated and also encouraging. I might get back once I've seen the ophthalmologist and know more. Paul |
