Re: yet another question re eye exam
It's your refractive prescription, so a description of the spectacle lens that would have to be made to correct your distance vision. It is written: Sphere/Cylinder xAxis Sphere indicates whether you are myopic (short sighted), hyperopic (long sighted) or emmotropic (neither). You are slightly myopic. The cyl. is a measure of astigmatism. This pretty hard concept to grasp (better with diagrams) but I'll give it a go. This occurs in 75% of people and means that the eye doesn't focus equally in all meridians. This is normally due to different curvatures on the front of your eye (the cornea). Maybe an example would be helpful. People often use a rugby (american football) ball analogy but I think the back face of a spoon is better. You can see that it has one steep curve (the short side) and one flat curve (the long side). Now if you look at your reflection it will be distorted. If the spoon was made of glass and light was passing through it then you would still get that sort of distortion. Cylinder corrects this. The amount of cyl. is how different the curvatures are. You have a moderate amount of cyl. The axis indicates the direction the cyl. has to placed to correct someones astigmatism. Think of it as which way we have to point the spoon. Hope this helps. P.S. I'm not completely buried by work at the moment (the students are gone for the summer) but I am supposed to be writing up my PhD thesis. But I'll stick check the forums so you, or anyone else, should feel free to keep posting questions. My only concern is how far from PDS can we stray? |
